A review of the sources about crop circles

In the article "Analysis of signs of authenticity of crop circles", it was concluded that to distinguish the signs of authenticity of formation is possible only in case, if you decide which circles the real. For this you need to go the historical way and is considered the "true" formation with those signs that existed before him for the active interest and attempts to repeat, it is necessary to find and analyze all possible data prior to 1990. To do this in the first place can be considered the earliest sources in which they are mentioned. Are considered:

  • the journal Nature (issue of July 29, 1880)
  • brochure The Mowing-Devil, 1678
  • the book The Natural History of Stafford-Shire Robert Plot 1686 from

Below we give a translation of those parts of the text of these sources that mention this phenomenon.

The Mowing-Devil, brochure, 1678

The devil is Grand, or Strange news out of Hertfordshire
The booklet is quite long (5 pages), but most of it was devoted to theological arguments about the existence of God and the Devil (which is not surprising given its release date). So here's a brief retelling of this story (or rather parables, because the names do not exist, actors are the Farmer and Neighbor) and was similar to the translation of the few sentences that describe a circle on the field (or something similar to what we now mean by this concept).

The story happened in August in Hertfordshire. There lived a rich industrious Farmer, who owned a small plot of land (approximately three half acres), which he had sown with oats. He went to the poor Neighbor who worked mainly in the summer, the harvest, in order to agree that one will mow his oats. However, the Neighbor has requested too high price for their work, much higher than usual and it was expected by the Farmer. After a short verbal altercation, the Farmer said that he had refused his Neighbor and more not going to discuss it. However, he suddenly realized that if he be without this little work, then in future Farmer will not have anything to offer him, ran after him and said that he is willing to do the work for the price less than he had offered anyone this year. However, the Farmer replied that it will have to deal with a Neighbor only if the Devil himself mow his oats, and went away.
That same night, according to several pilgrims, was in flames. The farmer told me about this morning, and he went to see what happened there.

Then close to the text translation:

Quote:

...inquisitive Farmer quickly came to the place where his oats grew, and to his delight found that the oats was mowed and ready for harvest; and as the Devil had a plan to show his dexterity in the art of harvesting, and despised the usual way of a taper, he cut the stems in circles, and placed every straw with precision, which would take a century any person who decided to do it. And the person who owns them, are still afraid to remove them.

The Natural History of Stafford-Shire

The book is very large, about 500 pages. Description of the community and attempts to understand its nature are given in the first Chapter, beginning with paragraph 17, and it is a wild grass, not fields of cultivated plants. The very description is provided in paragraph 18. The translation close to the text:

Quote:

But the difference between them lies not only in their diameter, they also differ in many aspects, although these differences are proportionately small. In my experience, disks, circles, from smaller to larger, rarely feet, or much more yards. Some naked, like paths, in many of its parts, the other covered with red scorched grass (and those from other the greener grass). Others covered in fresh dark green, and the grass inside the circle has a more brown color. The fourth type is rarely less than five or six yards in diameter, accompanied by two other circles of different sizes. And they can have an irregular shape and correct. Some are a third of the circle, the other semicircular. Other – a quarter or a sixth part of the respective circles.

In addition, in paragraph 30 refers to various forms of circles:

Quote:

Not only single, but sometimes double and triple circles, one inside the other... Less common square shape, inscribed in a circle.

In the rest of the Chapter the author tries to explain the formation of the described circles, rejecting the idea that they are used (and therefore formed) by witches, elves or fairies in their dances. The main idea put forward is that these circles are formed as a result of a lightning strike, and diversity, the author tries to explain the fact that lightning strikes from various distances (depending on the height of cloud cover), sometimes repeatedly, and the lightning may be different.

Translation as close as possible to the text

Quote:

Storms in this part of Surrey recently were local and violent, and their effects were in some cases very interesting. When you visit a neighbour's farm on Wednesday evening (21st), we found that the wheat field was damaged significantly, but not entirely, and portions, forming, as it seemed from afar, has a circular shape.
When examining more closely it turned out that they all had a similar character, namely, a few standing stalks in the center, a number of creeping stems with ears, spaced quite evenly, forming a circle around the center, and outside all – round wall of stems that were not damaged.
I sent a sketch made on the spot and give an idea about the most perfect of these sites. The soil in this area is sandy and moist, the culture grows healthy, strong stems. The peculiar shape of the plots in the field, to determine whether they were formed by wind, rain, or their combination, despite clear evidence of heavy rains everywhere in the area. It got me thinking about the act of some cyclonic wind. Perhaps a similar phenomenon was seen somewhere else some of your readers.

You should also add in a review of domestic magazine.

The "Vokrug Sveta" magazine (№4, 1965год, p. 14)

Quote:

In the morning the clear sky circling aircraft. Under the wing floated villages, arable land, a grove of ancient Burgundy. Professor Goga, a passionate lover of photography, shot most spectacularly lit landscapes.
The plane was flying along the Burgundy canal. Suddenly... HOGA ceased to believe his eyes. Near the city of Dijon, among a field of alfalfa, he saw a huge, correct form ring. It seemed that under the ground there is a giant circle – and the grass more dense and vivid than on the entire field, clearly outlined it. Nearby were visible the other ring, however, no such visible and smaller.
Gaga lost the rest. What lies under the ground? A century or a Millennium has left its mark on the alfalfa?
Gaga he shared his discovery with the archaeologists. Began the preparatory archaeological work, a number of hypotheses. Some scientists suggest that under the green circles are hidden sanctuary of the bronze age, others expect to find the underground remains of the medieval castle, once surrounded with a ditch, through which water once flowed. In their opinion, the groundwater continues to circulate, and now, giving extra moisture to the plants.
But while the mysterious circles on the alfalfa remain a mystery.

The above photo from Google Maps to compare the sizes of the channel and an approximate calculation of the size of the circles from the first photo. It depicts one of the gateways located throughout the length of the channel, such as depicted with circles.

Conclusion

Thus, the phenomenon of crop circles known for a long time. Definitely say in the description that also had an impact on the crops in the legend of the "Devil mower" impossible. In the log with high probability described by a simple wind. The description of rounds in the magazine "Around the world" we can assume the existence of spawn, since alfalfa is usually collected by cutting (so plowing does not damage the mycelium), but to grow to a diameter circles had for a long time, because every year the ring of mycelium only extends for 10-15 cm.
However, it turns out that at least in 1686 appeared a relatively complex shape in the form of double and triple circles, one inscribed in the other, and the square shape is inscribed in a circle, described by Robert Pattom in the book.

With the emergence of new sources of information article and the findings will be supplemented.
