Elderly Mrs. Charlotte V. (the woman was asked to press her surname is not indicated for anonymity) from the area of Tunbridge wells in Kent, UK, in 1968, as if stepped into the past while shopping in a small supermarket. She noticed anything strange, until I discovered that the room she went to was not there and did not exist for several years. Charlotte V. led a rather secluded life. Once a week she and her husband attended whist drive (visit to the neighbors for a game of whist). In addition to this, and their morning visits in Tunbridge wells, they are rarely left his cottage.
On Tuesday 18 June 1968 Mr. and Mrs. V. as usual went into town for shopping. They parted in the city center to buy to each his own, agreeing to meet later and drink a Cup of coffee in the restaurant of a Department store on the high street. Mrs. V. made his usual weekly stocks and really wanted to buy a box of shortbread as a prize for the whist drive. And not selecting the appropriate box in the stores where she usually frequented, she went to a small shop self-service that was unknown to her, and asked the seller whether the sale of such box. There was.
Not to leave empty-handed, Mrs. V. chose two boxes of soup and looked around, if there's anything on the shelves in her taste, when he noticed a passage in the wall to the left of her. It was the entrance to a rectangular room, at first glance, seven four meters, mahogany that contrasted sharply with the chrome and plastic trim shop.
"Red gave her a hard look,— says Mrs. V., I didn't notice anything there, but the room was lit by light bulbs with small shades of tinted glass. The room nepodaleku from the entrance I saw two couples dressed in the style of the mid-twentieth century, and still distinctly remember the clothes one of the women. Obliquely on the head was wearing a beige felt hat, trimmed on the left side of the bundle of dark fur, her coat was beige and quite fashionable, but a bit long for 1968".
Mrs. V. also noticed half a dozen men dressed in dark outfits, which sat a little further down in the room. All these people were sitting at tables cream color, drank coffee and chatted about something. It is quite a common stage for small towns at eleven o'clock in the morning. Near the left wall near the entrance was a small counter and under the glass counter, while the cashier wasn't there. Mrs. V. felt "a little strange" that she had not heard about this coffee shop before, but she thought it was a great idea from the self-service store, because the firm owner has long become an importer of tea and coffee.
"Another thing that struck me as odd, is that I didn't smell any coffee or, in the end, the other smells that are usually typical for a cafe, but in our days, when such ventilation I'm not very surprised."
Few moments Mrs. V. was hesitating whether she should try coffee just opened her cafe, but changed his mind and went out to meet her husband as they agreed. Of course, she told him about the "new coffee shop", and they decided to go there next Tuesday.
"A week later, having completed all our usual shopping, we went to the supermarket and went to the left wall, where I saw the entrance to the cafe, says Mrs. W.— There was no entrance, only a huge glass refrigerator with frozen foods. I was in shock. Husband would jokingly asked me what I saw last Tuesday. A little recovered, I asked the chief of the seller, whether in store cafe, but she shook her head and said that I probably have the wrong store. I left feeling like a complete fool."
Having visited their usual cafe, Mrs. V. finally recovered from the shock and persuaded her husband to go with her to find a mysterious coffee shop.
"Well," she says, " know what I saw. I told my husband last week. We went to two similar store down the street. Not one contained a cafe. In any case, I knew the shop, and I've never been to the other two."
Long and serious talking about the curious incident, Mrs. V. later visited miss S., founder of the Society of psychics in Tunbridge wells and is something of an expert on the supernatural. Unlike Mrs. V. miss S. has lived in Tunbridge wells for many years. Mrs. W. asked if she knew any of the structure, similar in detail to its description. Mrs. V. remember that seven or eight years ago near the supermarket there was a small cinema. Does not remember whether miss S., if there were an extension which housed a cafe? She didn't remember. But, after thinking a bit, she still remembered that some time ago, during the last war, she attended the constitutional club, Tunbridge wells, located to the left and behind a modern store which, she remembered, was lined with mahogany, and where there were dining tables.
"In short, says Mrs. V., I found the current address of constitutional club, which is now on the outskirts of town and talked to the Manager on the phone. He led the club in 1919, with a brief interruption during the Second world war. I tactfully asked him how I looked like an old club, in what areas were located and how many there were rooms. He told me that the club could get off the street, if you go to the door on the left from the supermarket (which was me) and climb the stairs. On the second floor was the meeting room, behind which (to the left of the store) was a small bar with tables. He was followed by a billiard room. He further told me that his job was to put the tables in the bar, where we've had meetings, except that the coffee was both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. I asked him to describe the cafe, which he did. Its description coincides with everything I saw. Then I told him about the incident. He thought it was pretty unusual."
Dr. A. R. J. Owen College at Trinity (Cambridge), an expert on anomalous phenomena, commented on this case:
"Mrs. V. seems to me a very normal person and obviously without quirks, her story does not contain any obvious flaws. Retrospective clairvoyance is much rarer than ordinary clairvoyance, and he can't give a proper explanation. Case in Tunbridge wells is very valuable for a researcher of the paranormal for several reasons. To begin with, the subject (Mrs. W.) knew exactly the time and place of the incident event. Also she has a very good memory for trivia, so she was able to give excellent descriptions of what I saw. Besides seen Mrs. V. amenable to investigation in the context of what was in the past. Thus, her case appears to be real and undeniable manifestation of retrospective clairvoyance".
Retrospective clairvoyance is a term used for a kind of paranormal phenomena, when a man falls in the past and see events and places that happened and existed for years before that.
