The Kazakh youth magazine "Zerde" in January 1989 published an interesting article about the "snowman", which contains the story of D. Kozhabergenov, who worked as a hunting inspector in the Tarbagatai district of the East Kazakhstan region in the late 60s.
"It was coming to winter, local shepherds, who were already descending from mountain pastures to the lowlands, to winter quarters, reported wolf raids on flocks and pointed to the place where it happened. Having prepared a gun and ammunition, he immediately mounted a horse and went in search of predators. Carried away, he went too far. I had to spend the night in hiding.
Shortly before dawn I noticed four shadows. I thought they were thieves, or poachers. He became alert and began to closely monitor what would happen next. And when the first rays of dawn splashed, I was literally stunned, noticing some creatures in fur coats inside out. Busy with their business, the strangers were at a very close distance, they were not in fur coats at all, but in their own skin.
Their fur was similar to that of a camel, but dark brown in color. It is thicker on the back and especially on the nape of the neck, and on the arms and sides less. The eyes are sunken, the eyebrows are thick, pulled forward. Hands fall freely to the knees. Undoubtedly, they were savages, but they looked very much like people."
