Initial data
In March 1967, Lieutenant Robert Salas was the deputy commander of the missile combat crew on the Oscar Flight missile launcher at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana. It was the Minuteman ICBM mine complex, and, according to Salas, the base guards contacted him by radio and reported a "glowing red ball" over the entrance gate of the base. Shortly after this call, he reported that 8-10 Oscar Flight ICBM missiles had failed.
Another guard from the Echo Flight launcher located nearby later told him that he noticed an object flying by "red or orange-red", which "glowed" and looked "like a fireball", "did not have a clear shape and seemed round." Then another 8-10 nuclear missiles were disabled at the Echo cosmodrome. These documented cases of missile shutdowns, allegedly related to UAP observations, remain unexplained and are described in detail in Salas' book "The Tarnished Giant", co-authored with James Klotz.
