A flock of sheep in China has been going around in circles for almost two weeks, and it seems that no one really knows why. The strange behavior was recorded by CCTV cameras at a sheep farm in northern China.

In a video released Wednesday by Chinese state-run news outlet People's Daily, dozens of sheep can be seen walking clockwise in a circle while other animals watch from outside the circle. Although it has been reported that the sheep look perfectly healthy, it is unclear whether the animals ever stop to eat and drink, and whether others take their place in the circle when this happens.

The owner of a sheep farm, who gave her name as Mrs. Miao, told reporters that the strange sight began on November 4 with a handful of sheep, but in the following days dozens of others joined them. Interestingly, although the farm consists of 34 sheep pens, only the sheep at number 13 behaved strangely.

A video of sheep walking in circles went viral in China shortly after being posted online by People's Daily, and several theories about the strange movement have since emerged. The most popular theory is that sheep are infected with a bacterium that causes a condition known as listeriosis, also called "circle disease".

According to the Merck Manual, "initially affected animals suffer from anorexia, depression and disorientation. They can huddle in corners, lean against stationary objects or circle towards the affected side."

However, the above theory has already been challenged, because sheep and goats suffering from listeriosis usually die within 14-48 hours after the first symptoms appear. The sheep in the viral video have been doing this for 12 days in a row, and they seem perfectly healthy.

Although this behavior is considered unusual, it is not unheard of. A similar situation occurred in 2108, when a hundred reindeer on the Kola Peninsula of Russia walked in a circle for no apparent reason.

Original news

Hundreds of sheep have been walking eerily in circles in northern China's Inner Mongolia region for the past 12 days. The strange behavior, captured on surveillance video, shows the large herd continuously marching clockwise in a near-perfect circle around a farm. The New York Post reports. Some other sheep watch the rotation from the outside, while others sometimes remain motionless in the middle.

Famous creatures

There are a huge number of different living organisms on our planet. According to recent estimates, the number of species of organisms on our planet is approximately 7-10 million. However, only 15% of the data are described today.

According to the calculations of Canadians, 2.2 million species live in the world's oceans, 6.5 million on land. There are only about 7.8 million species of animals on the planet, 611 thousand fungi, and 300 thousand plants.

Investigation

As for deer, this behavior of animals has long been known to scientists. Due to the round shape of the herd and the corresponding movement, deer protect their weakest brethren (as a rule, these are cubs and females) from the attacks of predatory animals.

Zoologists remind that not only deer use this technique, but also a number of other ungulates, for example bison and bison.

Murmansk resident Grigory Paramonov, a professional photographer, who also takes pictures of the life of fauna, managed to capture an amazing "round dance" arranged by deer.

News: "Round dance" of deer at Lovozer

Murmansk photojournalist Lev Fedoseev was lucky enough to capture on video a unique sight from the life of reindeer near the legendary Lovozer. Fedoseyev shot a video using a drone when reindeer farms in the Arctic region were vaccinating animals.

In the video, you can see how a huge rotating circle with a pronounced "epicenter"is slowly formed from a herd of adult male deer.
