Circles on the field and other formations. Iceland

Initial data

Initial information from sources or from an eyewitness
Incident date:
09.03.2017
Location:
озеро Тингваллаватн
Iceland

The theory proposed by Dr. Horace Drew of the California Institute of Technology (CALTECH) coincides with the theory of some crop specialists (people studying crop circles) who believe that these strange and complex diagrams are created by intelligent alien beings from other worlds. But they are formed not only in the fields.

Images of a strange pattern on Lake Tingvallavatn (ÞIngvallavatn) were published on the page of the National Park Tingvellir (ÞIngvellir) on Facebook. According to the information attached to the images, the mysterious pattern was discovered by a local resident who said it was a phenomenon that had never been seen in the area.

“On March 9, someone noticed a strange pattern on the ice cover, a phenomenon of the occiput that was noticed earlier,” Einar A.E. Saemundsen, a representative of the Tingvellir National Park, told the media. “The linear and perpendicular pattern extended in the lake for more than 2 km. The lines did not form in the same place, so they were not cracks..”

Puzzled by what they saw, many residents turned to the park staff for clarification, but not before they expressed a few guesses of their own. A child riding a sleigh? A drone pilot? Drunk snowmobile driver? The problem with all these suggestions is that the ice on the lake is too thin and unstable to support any weight.

Samundsen noticed that the amazing linear patterns, covering an area of more than two kilometers, were not formed in the same region as other cracks in the ice. He also noted that many residents suggested the possibility that it was an extraterrestrial formation.

“Speculation has started, and there are alternative explanations, such as extraterrestrial activity and unknown monsters in the lake, all sorts of strange conspiracy theories,” Samundsen added.

And it is not surprising that many believe that the strange formation may have an extraterrestrial origin.

Samundsen relied on a study published by Yale University professor John Wettlaufer in 2007 in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters, where he explained the anomaly. Studies have shown that the amazing phenomenon is not the result of a specific feature of ice, but rather is a general and mechanical phenomenon reproduced in the laboratory with other floating materials. In addition, Wettlaufer said that the amazing pattern is very similar to the teeth of lightning. But, according to Samundsen, this is the first time this phenomenon has been seen on Lake Tingvallavatn.

Original news

Thingvellir National Park posted images to their Facebook wall today of strange formations in the ice covering Lake Thingvallavatn, with the following information:

“Lake Thingvallavatn used to have solid ice cover from around early January until spring. For the last 15 years solid ice cover on the lake has not formed as solid as in the past due to increasing temperatures. The lake has gathered partial ice cover for shorter periods and more unstable. For the past couple of weeks a thin ice has been on big parts of the lake. Today someone noted a strange looking pattern in the ice cover which is still unexplained and locals have not seen before. Here are some photos but it will obviously disappear in few days or weeks.”

According to Wikipedia the phenomenon is known as Finger rafting and occurs when two sheets of ice on a body of water different textures interlace on top of each other. This can be due to two different kinds of water, salt water and freshwater freezing together, or the different age and thickness of the ice. On lake Thingvallavatn which is the largest body of fresh water in Iceland, the phenomenon of Finger Rafting has never been seen until now.

Finger rafting

"Finger rafting process" or Finger rafting it develops in the ice cover as a result of the compression regime established in the ice plane.

When two sites of sea ice approach, one of them smoothly slides over the other (moves) at a given distance, which leads to a local increase in the thickness of the ice. The term refers to the systematic alternation of interconnected "thrusts" and "sub-thrusts" from the ice pads involved in this process. This pattern got its name because of the similarity with the interlacing of fingers.

Investigation

Versions testing, their confirmation or refutation. Additional information, notes during the study of materials

As indicated in the source articles, Finger rafting is a pressure process in which pieces of ice are superimposed on each other, usually on new ice and young ice, and thus strange patterns are created.
