R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned

A parallel world in the film can be considered hell, from which the damned souls are chosen. Its gates weaken partially during a solar eclipse and practically cease to be an obstacle during a lunar eclipse. One of the characters in the film points out that similar eclipses occur every 25 years. (It's hard to say what is remarkable about the eclipses described in the film. The closest analogue of the really existing cycles can be considered saros, i.e. the time interval through which the mutual arrangement of the Sun, Moon and nodes of the lunar orbit repeats. It is 223 revolutions of the moon, that is, 18 years, 11 days and 8 hours.)

The gates to hell can be opened in a certain mine, while the spirits should be "invited" to the earthly world, i.e. people should open these gates.

Hell is a fiery space, similar to the mouth of a volcano, inhabited by spirits. It exudes a toxic stench that kills people, but is completely safe for spirits.

To close the gates, it is necessary to "extinguish hell", for which the film uses an ancient relic – the Tears of Jesus.

The concept of "dead men" differs significantly from that shown in the original picture.

The restless souls shown in the film are divided into positive characters working for R.I.P.D., and negative ones – cursed spirits who came from hell. All of them have a body shell, but at the same time they cannot die, do not get injured and do not feel the effects of toxic air.

The souls serving in R.I.P.D. receive a corporeal shell at the moment of teleportation to Earth, and it differs as much as possible from their kind before death. Their loved ones do not recognize them, and when such a soul tries to talk to them, they hear something inarticulate. Such souls have a burnt R.I.P.D. mark, but it is not known whether it is displayed on their earthly bodies.

Cursed souls inhabit the bodies of ordinary people (where the human soul goes at the same time is unknown). On these bodies, the symbol of the Ouroboros is spontaneously burned out, from the center of which, after exposure to holy water, the cursed spirit breaks out, tearing the body. The spirit itself looks like a shapeless gray-black substance, in which you can see the outlines of a skull with glowing eyes. At the same time, such spirits are not necessarily evil and can even do good deeds.

A special case of the cursed soul in the film is the right hand of the ruler of hell, who wanted to rule himself, so he decided to create his kingdom on Earth. It is he who breaks out of Hell first and tries to free his fellow men. Other damned souls obey him.

Conventional weapons do not cause harm to souls (and their material shells). A bullet is perceived as a snake bite. However, special weapons (pistols and swords) can disembowel the spirit, completely destroying it. The main cursed spirit can be killed only with the help of a special artifact – the Tears of Jesus.

The eyes of a person who is possessed by a cursed spirit become black for a while, and they also turn black when the spirit gains strength or breaks out.

The body of a person who is possessed by a cursed spirit rises into the air and hangs for a while.
