House of Dark Shadows

Movie|1970

The story of vampire Barnabas Collins, the possible cure offered him by Dr. Julia Hoffman, and his search for love amidst the horror.

Handsome young artist Quentin Collins arrives at the Collingwood estate he recently inherited with his beautiful wife Tracy. There they meet housekeeper Carlotta Drake and caretaker Gerard Stiles. Quentin finds a portrait of the XIX century, which depicts a blonde with charming green eyes that seem to fascinate him. Carlotta informs him that the woman in the portrait is Angelica, who lived here more than 100 years ago. Collins' friends Alex and Claire Jenkins, who have co-authored several successful horror novels, move to the estate and settle in a guest cottage.

Soon Quentin begins to be disturbed by dreams and visions about one of his ancestors, Charles Collins, and his mistress Angelica, who was hanged on charges of witchcraft in the last century. Carlotta tells Quentin that she considers herself the reincarnation of Sarah Castle– a little girl who lived in Collingwood more than 150 years ago, and Quentin himself is the reborn Charles Collins. Charles had an affair with Angelica, the wife of his brother Gabriel. As a result of the scandal that broke out, Angelica was hanged, and Charles was immured alive in the family crypt along with the corpse of his mistress.

During a trip to New York, the Jenkins discover a portrait of Charles Collins, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Quentin. Convinced that their friends are in serious danger, the couple rushes to Collingwood, where they are attacked by Angelica's ghost.

Meanwhile, possessed by the spirit of Charles Collins, Quentin tries to drown Tracy in an abandoned swimming pool. Alex and Claire manage to save her, but Quentin does not remember his actions and refuses to believe their story, calling him insane.

Carlotta and Gerard agree to destroy Quentin's loved ones. Quentin, seeing the scratches left by Tracy on his wrist, realizes that Alex and Claire were telling the truth, and rushes to save his friends. Gerard manages to grab Tracy despite Claire shooting him in the face, and Quentin fights him on the railway bridge. During the fight, Gerard wounds Quentin, leaving a cut on his left cheek, very similar to the wound that Charles Collins had, Tracy rushes to save her husband and hits Gerard, pushing him to the edge of the overpass. For a moment, he teeters on the edge of a cliff, but after another blow, Tracy falls and falls to her death.

The friends return to Collingwood to deal with Carlotta. However, she jumps from the roof of the house to the ghostly Angelica, beckoning her from below.

Couples are preparing to leave Collingwood forever. Alex and Claire leave first, Quentin and Tracy should follow them. Quentin returns to the house to pick up some canvases. He doesn't come back for a long time, and Tracy follows him. At the house, she discovers that Quentin is completely obsessed with Charles Collins. Angelica enters the room in the flesh. The camera stops on Tracy's face, who starts screaming when Quentin and Angelica attack her.

At the end of the film, a news story is shown, from which it becomes clear that Alex and Claire Jenkins died in a car accident. Witnesses of the incident reported that they saw a ghostly fog filling the car that lost control and drove off the road.
