The fish of the frightening species, which lives at a depth of about 1 thousand meters, was washed up on the beach in California, USA last week. The black "deep sea monster" refers to the anglerfish, its mouth is full of sharp teeth, and its rounded body looks like a soccer ball, CNN reports.

The mouth of the anglerfish is so large that the fish is able to capture and swallow prey the size of its own body.

The creature was found in a protected area of Crystal Cove State Park in Laguna Beach. According to the California State Parks Administration, the fish found is one of more than two hundred species of anglerfish that live in the oceans.

Due to the size of the creature and the protruding appendage on the top of its head, biologists determined that it was a female. The fish uses a long stem on its head with bioluminescent tips to lure prey. Females grow up to 60 cm, while males reach only 2.5 cm.
