Scientists from the Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics SB RAS said that they have established the reason for the appearance of a new crater in Yamal. The researchers reported that the permafrost was heated by underground heat sources.
They investigated the methane crater C17 with a diameter of 25 meters and a depth of 30 meters, which was discovered last summer.
Such depressions then become lakes, so it was necessary to study the funnel as soon as possible. Drones were used. As a result, it turned out that the crater was formed in the period from May 15 to June 9 due to the melting of the lower layers of permafrost. This indicates that an unknown source of heat is present. In the future will be organized another expedition to the Yamal Peninsula.
These craters appear in the polar regions are increasingly due to the melting of ketraco (frozen water connections and methane). As the temperature rises, methane is released into the underground cavities. In the future, an explosion occurs, which leads to the formation of a crater.
The model demonstrated the presence of grottos and cavities in the lower part of the crater, which was proof of the hypothesis that methane accumulates in the ice cavity. The earth swells, a bump appears on the surface, and at some point an explosion occurs. However, the source of methane remains unclear. Probably, the gas can both form closer to the surface, and rise from the deep layers of the soil.
