In the Republic of Malawi (East Africa) an angry mob killed at least six people. Bloody clashes began in mid-September, when there was a rumor that some vampires kill people and suck their blood.
The country quickly formed a voluntary group of so called "vampire hunters", which in fact are ordinary vigilantes. They attack anyone suspected of vampirism and beat or kill these people.
Hysteria over vampires and fear of becoming a victim of these "hunters" have reached a point of tension that the United Nations (UN) beginning in the rush to evacuate their employees. It is noted that the vigilantes were trying to block the escape routes of staff of the United Nations and guarded them on the roads.
Still remains unknown the true cause of the outbreak of vampire hysteria. Supposedly the rumors about the attack of the ghouls came from neighboring Mozambique and spread rapidly among the rural people of Malawi who believe in ghosts, spirits and vampires.
The Republic of Malawi is located in East Africa and bordered by Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania. Most hysteria hit the districts of Phalombe and Mulanje, it is home to many of the rural poor, among which the widespread superstition, the supernatural and the belief in witchcraft.
In 2002, there broke out a similar wave of violence associated with the rumors about vampires. The President of Malawi Peter Mutharika has expressed serious concern about the situation.
