In Finnish folklore, the house spirit is called Kotihaltia or Tonttu. It is believed that Kotihaltia is a "real brownie" who lives in every house and keeps order, and Tonttu are house creatures that live in the house of Joulupukki (Finnish Santa Claus). But sometimes these names are mentioned as synonyms.

A brownie lives in every building, but people do not see him (they mention that he is so secretive that he does not even cast shadows). Therefore, it is not known how he looks, he is usually represented as an ordinary dwarf in a red cap (although sometimes it is added that he has one eye in the center of his face), who lives in the attic of the house. Most often he looks after the household, but as a joke he can break furniture, tie the tails of cattle.

There are also references to the spirits of other places and buildings: Leipuritonttu (tonttu stove maker), who loves to bake Finnish gate pies and rye bread with a hole in the middle.

  • Kneading the dough, he sings opera arias.
  • Postitonttu (postman tonttu), knows by heart all the names of Finnish cities and streets.
  • Puutarkhatonttu (tonttu gardener). This spirit has the appearance of a cute rosy-cheeked girl who understands the language of plants and communicates with them all year round, creating beautiful gardens.
  • Saunatonttu (tonttu bannik). He will warn them about the danger of burning out in the steam room, about a fire or any other trouble, but if someone uses the sauna for other purposes, Saunatonttu re-educates him by pouring boiling water over him.
