El testigo Billy Doyle salió a dar un paseo de rutina por los campos de golf hacia Beachy Head. Caminó durante unos 90 minutos en aire frío. Estaba muy oscuro y se dirigió de regreso al hotel. Para hacerlo, era necesario cortar el camino, buceando debajo de la cerca de alambre que protege los campos de golf, pero mientras continuaba su camino, sucedió algo extraño.
Una niebla rodante o una nube espesa vino del mar y rápidamente envolvió el terreno, por lo que la visibilidad se redujo a unos pocos pies. Como los campos no estaban iluminados, todo estaba inmerso en la oscuridad. Además, las cosas se volvieron inquietantemente silenciosas y silenciosas.

"Hablaba Inglés que nunca habías escuchado, claro, preciso, sin irlandés en él. Fue amigable pero convincente. Simplemente se metió en mi cabeza y me hizo creer eso".
Las palabras "No tengas miedo" son las únicas palabras que un testigo podría recordar con precisión. Él los repetía. Es como si en un trance Billy fuera atraído a un objeto.
"Fui a la luz porque la voz me obligó. Me repetía todo el tiempo, en voz alta en mi cabeza, no sé, está bien. Estoy a salvo. Entonces todo cambió".
Este cambio ocurrió instantáneamente. No recuerda el interruptor. En un momento, Billy estaba aturdido caminando sobre la hierba hacia el fuego, al momento siguiente desapareció y una superficie dura y dura surgió debajo de sus pies. Hizo una doble mirada rápida y miró a su alrededor.

The witness, Billy Doyle had set off for his customary walk over the golf links toward Beachy Head. He walked for about 90 minutes in the chilly air. It was pitchdark now and he began to make his way back toward the hotel. To do so involved a short cut, ducking under a wire fence protecting the golf links, but as he continued on his path something odd happened. Rolling mist or thick cloud came in from the sea and rapidly enveloped the area in such a way that visibility was reduced to a few feet. As the fields were unlit, everything was plunged into blackness. It had also become eerily still and silent. Knowing the dangers of the cliff-tops, Doyle stopped in his tracks and began to plan his next move. Suddenly a huge “star” appeared from out of the mist above the English Channel. He assumed it was a search and rescue helicopter. As the glow approached and settled on the ground ahead of him he noted that it had a remarkable violet/blue glow to it. The stunned witness also noticed that it was like a solid object like a mass of lights of the most wonderful colors. The lights moved about attracting the witness’s attention, especially the greens and reds. He could not see the exact shape, because the glow from these moving lights was very intense. Once the initial shock was over, Doyle noticed that he was getting physical sensations from the object. “My skin was tingling like it was charged or something and my hair was standing on end.” Suddenly a voice filled Billy Doyle’s head. “It spoke in an English you have never heard—clear, precise, not a trace of Irish about it. It was friendly, yet persuasive. It just probed into my head and made me believe it.” The words “Don’t be afraid” are the only words that the witness could precisely recall. It kept repeating them. As if in a trance Billy was lured toward the object. “I walked towards the lights because the voice made me. I kept repeating to myself— out loud in my head, I don’t know—it’s all right. I am safe. Then everything changed.” This change occurred instantly. He has no memory of a switch. One moment Billy was walking across the grass toward the lights in a daze, the next it had gone and there was a hard, solid surface beneath his feet. He did a quick double take and looked around. Somehow he was on a road and he was waking right up the middle of it. Everything was clear. The mist had gone. Billy quickly stepped off the highway and onto the pavement. After regaining his bearings he realized that it was already 0130A.
