Paula Kopestake, su esposo Philip y su hijo Edward, de 8 años, visitaron el sitio Neolítico en un claro y claro mediodía. Mientras el Señor Kopestak fotografiaba los terrenos de la Plaza de la estación, Paula Kopestak subió a la cima de la colina para disfrutar de las vistas panorámicas y disfrutar de la privacidad. A primera vista, parecía que unas cinco personas, una más pequeña al frente y las otras dos parejas, caminaban rápidamente hacia Belas Knap a lo largo de la frontera del campo, que forma parte de Cotswold Road. Miraban hacia adelante y vestían ropas oscuras, grisáceas y negras idénticas con caras pálidas, ovaladas y translúcidas debajo de las capuchas puntiagudas. Estaban a solo unos cientos de metros de distancia. Su hijo la distrajo brevemente, y cuando volvió a mirar hacia atrás, se sorprendió por la aparición de nuevas figuras en el grupo.
Ella le dijo a su esposo que "cientos" de personas estaban caminando, y con impaciencia le aconsejó que se diera prisa porque parecía que al menos una docena de ellos caminaban a propósito hacia su lugar. Parecían emerger de las sombras oscuras de los árboles y arbustos de hoja perenne que sobresalían en el límite entre dos campos vecinos. Cada figura tenía capuchas, y todavía seguían la figura más pequeña al frente.
Ella sugirió que la figura principal debería haber sido un niño de 12 años porque era la mitad del resto. No podía ver ninguna parte de sus cuerpos por debajo del nivel de sus rodillas, por lo que pensó que debían haber caminado sobre la larga y pálida hierba muerta que cubría sus extremidades inferiores.
Caminaron silenciosamente a lo largo del seto, nunca se volvieron hacia sus compañeros, pero todos caminaron con un paso enérgico, por lo que se sorprendió al ver que estaban en la misma posición que antes en el campo. Summary: Paula Copestake, her husband Phillip, and 8-year-old son Edward were visiting the Neolithic site in a crisp clear afternoon. While Mr. Copestake was busying himself taking photographs of the forecourt area, Paula Copestake climbed to the top of the mound in order to take in the panoramic view and to enjoy the solitude. She was therefore disappointed to see a group of people moving towards the site from the northwest, across and adjacent field. At first sight there seemed to be about five people, one smaller in front and the others in two pairs, walking quickly towards Belas Knap along the field boundary which forms part of the Cotswold Way. They faced forward and were all dressed alike in dark, grayish black clothes with pale, oval, translucent faces beneath pointed hoods. They were only a few hundred yards away. Her son briefly distracted her, and when she looked back again she was startled by the emergence of more figures in the group. She told her husband that “hundreds” of people were coming and she impatiently told him to hurry because there seemed to be at least a dozen of them walking purposefully towards their location. They seemed to emerge from the dark shadows of the overhanging evergreen trees and bushes along the boundary between the two nearby fields. Every figure was hooded and they still followed the smaller figure at the front. She assumed that the lead figure must have been a child of about 12 because he was half the height of the others. She could not see any part of their bodies below knee level so she thought they must have been walking through long pale dead grass that obscured their lower limbs. They walked closely along the hedge line in silence, never turning to their companions but all walking at a vigorous pace, so she was surprised to see that they appeared to be in the same position as before in the field. They did not appear to have made any progress in reaching the long barrow, despite their fairly rapid pace. They appeared to walk down a slope and up again as if going down into a ditch and up the other side. Annoyed at the intrusion the witness took one final look at them and then deliberately turned her back and walked to the other end of the mound. Disturbingly, they had seemed to be even further away than ever although still moving as purposefully toward them. She then joined her son and husband who had finished his activities as he climbed up to mound to look he was surprised to see no one at all.
