28 de noviembre de 2004 a las 4:50 pm hora local en Spirit Lake, Idaho, vi a la estación espacial internacional moverse de oeste a este.
El cielo aún no estaba completamente oscuro, diría que había minutos 20-25 antes de la oscuridad máxima. Cuando la estación espacial estaba a unos 60 grados sobre el horizonte este. Observé que la luz muy brillante evolucionaba rápidamente a unos 5-10 grados a la izquierda (Norte) de la estación espacial y aparentemente un poco por debajo de la altura equivalente de la estación. La luz evolucionó rápidamente a un brillo aproximadamente diez veces mayor que la magnitud estelar de Venus, que es aproximadamente 4 o 5 veces el brillo de la luz de aterrizaje.
Duró aproximadamente 4 segundos y luego se desvaneció rápidamente hasta un punto brillante, moviéndose muy lentamente de derecha a izquierda. La trayectoria se veía a unos 10 a 15 grados de la línea recta entre mí y el objeto, no podía decir si se acercaba a mí o se alejaba (aunque mi impresión inicial era que se acercaba a mí), y apreciaría su posición como en algún lugar sobre el Norte de Montana. Siguió atenuándose y desapareciendo, moviéndose lentamente.
Resultó que se movía mucho más lento que un meteoro, aunque un pequeño ángulo podría explicarlo. Fue la cosa más brillante que he visto en el cielo, excepto la Luna o el sol. He sido testigo de muchos meteoros, pero mi primer comentario de mi madre, que también vio este objeto, fue:
"¿Qué diablos es eso ?!»
Pensé que podría ser un módulo que, según el sitio web de la NASA, pronto se desconectará de la estación espacial y se quemará en la atmósfera. sin embargo, es probable que esté DEBAJO de la trayectoria de la Estación, y dudo que lo hagan sobre un área densamente poblada.
He sido controlador de tráfico aéreo en la FAA en seis Salas de control diferentes durante un total de 21 años, 4 años antes en un portaaviones de la Armada tengo casi 1, 000 horas de vuelo con licencia comercial, instructor de vuelo y Calificaciones de instrumentos, soy un observador meteorológico calificado y nunca he visto algo así.
Si se trataba de un meteoro, se suponía que era muy grande, pero parecía moverse MUCHO más lento que un meteoro.

Summary: At 16:50 local time in Spirit Lake, Idaho on November 28, 2004 I was observing the International Space Station moving overhead from west to east. The sky was not totally dark yet, I would say it was about 20-25 minutes before max darkness. When the Space Station was approx. 60 degrees above the eastern horizon I observed an extremely bright light develop rapidly about 5-10 degrees to the left (north) of the Space Station and apparently slightly below the equivelent elevation of the Station. The light developed rapidly to a brightness about ten times the magnitude of Venus, about 4 or 5 times the brightness of a landing light. It lasted for about 4 seconds and then rapidly dimmed to a glowing pinpoint as it traveled very slowly from my right to left. The trajectory appeared to be about 10-15 degrees apart from a line directly between me and the object, I could not tell if it was coming toward me or going away (although my initial impression was that it was coming toward me), and I estimate it’s position as somewhere over northern Montana. It continued to dim and vanished as it moved slowly. It appeared to move much more slowly than a meteor, although the shallow angle might account for that. It was the brightest thing I have ever witnessed in the sky other than the moon or the sun. I have witnessed many meteors but my first remark to my mother, who saw the object also, was, “what the hell is that?!” I thought it might be a module that, according to the NASA website, would soon detach from the Space Station and burn up in the atmosphere, however that would most likely appear to be UNDER the trajectory of the Station, and I doubt they would do it over a populated area. I have been an Air Traffic Controller for the FAA at six different control towers for a total of 21 years, 4 years before that on a carrier in the Navy, I have close to 1,000 hours of flight time with Commercial License, Flight Instructor, and Instrument Flight Ratings, am a qualified Weather Observer, and have never seen anything like it. If it was a meteor it had to be very large, but appeared to be moving MUCH slower than a meteor.
