Dos estudiantes del Instituto Politécnico nacional de la ciudad de México serán los protagonistas del aún discutido "encuentro cercano del 3er tipo", que será uno de los primeros en el país. Los hermanos Yayo y Payo Rodríguez alcanzaron la fama nacional cuando en la mañana del 19 de agosto de 1965, a las ocho de la mañana, declararon haber presenciado el aterrizaje de un gran disco luminoso en un campo abierto cerca del campus de la Universidad Politécnica. El vehículo de otro mundo supuestamente quemó la vegetación cuando cayó al Suelo en su chasis de trípode.
Como si el aterrizaje de esta nave espacial, dibujado directamente de "Mi marciano favorito", no fuera suficiente, los hermanos Rodríguez también afirmaron que un par de criaturas en miniatura con algunos respiradores salieron de la nave y se acercaron a los estudiantes asustados, arrojándoles un objeto metálico debajo de sus pies.
El "equipo invitado" enano (en el lenguaje de Star Trek) regresó silenciosamente a su vehículo, que se elevó en el aire en segundos.
Los Rodríguez llevaron el supuesto fragmento extraterrestre al laboratorio del campus, donde los investigadores aparentemente lo analizaron.
Según un artículo en el periódico mexicano el Gráfico (desaparecido), días después varios periodistas y fotógrafos de diversos medios de comunicación visitaron el lugar, donde se veían claramente marcas de quemaduras y rastros de un curioso líquido caracterizado como "combustible". (¿con plomo? ¿sin plomo?). A pesar de la buena evidencia física, Yae y Payo no fueron considerados testigos creíbles. Incluso el Dr. Santiago García, en su libro icónico OVNIS sobre México, tituló un capítulo sobre el caso Rodríguez como " ¿de qué fumarian?"("¿qué fumaban?»).

Two students at Mexico City's Instituto Nacional Politécnico would become the protagonists of a still-debated "close encounter of the 3rd kind" which would be among the first of its kind in the country. The brothers Yayo and Payo Rodríguez achieved national prominence when on the morning of August 19, 1965, at eight o'clock in the morning, they claimed having witnessed the landing of a sizeable glowing disk on an open field near the Politécnico's campus. The otherworldly vehicle allegedly charred vegetation as it settled to the ground on its tripodal landing gear. As if the landing of this spaceship, drawn straight from My Favorite Martian, wasn't enough, the Brothers Rodríguez also claimed that a pair of diminutive beings wearing respirators of some kind emerged from the craft and walked up to the terrified students, depositing at their feet a metallic object. The dwarfish "away team" (in Star Trek parlance) returned silently to their conveyance, which took to the air in a matter of seconds.
The Rodríguezes delivered the putative extraterrestrial fragment to the campus laboratory, where it was apparently subjected to analysis by investigators. According to an article in Mexico's El Gráfico newspaper (defunct) a few days later, a number of journalists and photographers from different media organizations visited the site, where burn marks were plainly visible and where traces of a curious liquid, characterized as "fuel" (leaded? unleaded?) were found. Despite the good physical evidence, Yayo and Payo were not considered credible witnesses. Even Dr. Santiago García, in his landmark book OVNIS Sobre México, would headline his chapter on the Rodríguez case as "¿de cual fumarían?" ("what kind did they smoke?").
