Datos iniciales
3 de enero de 1974: uno de los casos más importantes en los anales de ufología de puerto rico ocurrió poco antes de las 8 P. m.de ese día. Participaron niños, adultos y adultos mayores de la urbanización Flamingo Terrace, en Bayamón. Nuestro estudio incluyó entrevistas con 10 familias diferentes, entre las cuales se entrevistó a tres niños de 7 a 10 años, 6 adultos y una persona mayor.Por lo tanto, se recopilaron impresiones y descripciones de testigos oculares de todas las edades.
En el momento en cuestión, la Sra. Lizzie Rodríguez de Maisone se encontraba cerca de su casa cuando de repente vio un objeto redondo. "Era plano en la parte inferior, con una protuberancia en la parte superior que se parecía a un plato de sopa invertido. Al ver el OVNI, llamó a su esposo, ex piloto de una aerolínea comercial, y a la vecina iris Esther Rivera. Se reunieron en Guillermina. La vecina, por su parte, alertó a sus hijos, Richard, de 10 años, Raymond, de 9, y Ronnie, de 8, quienes observaron lo que estaba sucediendo junto a los adultos antes mencionados.
Todos estos testigos vieron cómo el objeto se movía de este a oeste a una velocidad menor que la de los aviones que normalmente vuelan en la zona cuando aterrizaban o despegaban del aeropuerto internacional de isla verde (hoy aeropuerto Luis Muñoz Marín-SC). Observaron el OVNI hasta que desapareció detrás de una montaña cubierta de árboles a unos 300 metros de distancia. Una breve descripción del terreno es importante en esta etapa debido a los eventos posteriores que ocurrieron esta noche.
La calle Guillermina es la Última del complejo Flamingo Terrace, adyacente a un barranco por el que fluye un pequeño arroyo. Detrás del arroyo, una pequeña colina se eleva unos 30, y tal vez solo 20 metros. Esta colina está cubierta por un denso bosque en las laderas hasta la cima, donde se convierte en una pequeña meseta. En esta meseta se encuentra la escuela Miguel Meléndez.
Después de la primera observación, los testigos regresaron a sus hogares, con la excepción de los tres hijos de Rivera. A las 20: 10, estos niños volvieron a ver un OVNI en la calle Guillermina. El objeto permaneció colgado en el aire sobre la montaña frente a ellos a una altura de aproximadamente 10-15 metros sobre el Suelo. En ese momento, se creía que el OVNI estaba justo encima de la escuela. Según los niños, el OVNI se veía "como un plato de sopa invertido" con "una serie de luces brillantes en la parte inferior que parecían girar rápidamente". Debido a que el objeto estaba inmóvil, una luz cilíndrica brillante de color blanco (con un tinte amarillo) emanaba de la parte central inferior del objeto. Con esta luz, los niños vieron cinco bolas aparentemente sólidas de un tono verde claro que se hundieron, siendo la primera de ellas la de mayor diámetro. Diez segundos después, la luz desapareció, cerrando la hendidura o el agujero por el que pasaron las bolas.
Los niños afirmaron haber visto un espacio cuadrado en el costado del objeto a través del cual se podía ver un punto de luz azul "como una pequeña bombilla", en o entre la base de la luz blanca. En ese momento, los niños gritaban a su madre y a otros vecinos que vinieran a ver lo que veían.
De repente," la brecha cuadrada se volvió dura como el resto de la superficie " del OVNI, y la nave comenzó a alejarse en la misma dirección hacia el sur. Se detuvo de nuevo y salió "mucho humo blanco" de la parte inferior del disco, que parecía levantar el polvo de los terrenos de la escuela. Este fenómeno duró unos 20 segundos.
En ese momento, el OVNI reanudó su lento movimiento hacia el sur, deteniéndose sobre una pequeña casa propiedad de la Autoridad de acueductos y alcantarillados. Testigos de esta maniobra fueron Carmen Rivera Vargas, iris Esther Rivera, Lizzie Rodríguez de Mesone, Carmen Aida Saldaña, Antonio Pagán Saldaña, familiares y vecinos que se reunieron al escuchar los gritos de los niños.
El OVNI se cernió durante unos segundos sobre la pequeña casa en cuestión y luego se retiró lentamente hasta que desapareció por completo. Los testigos afirman que cuando los primeros gritos disminuyeron, escucharon un ligero zumbido del objeto.
Todo el tiempo, este objeto se movía lentamente, como si estuviera "observando" lo que estaba sucediendo, y permaneció a una Altitud de aproximadamente 10-15 metros y a una distancia de 200-300 metros de los testigos.
Según informes no confirmados, el niño vio un objeto aéreo, aparentemente sobre el mismo territorio que el complejo vecino de Sanssouci. En el momento de escribir este artículo, no fue posible entrevistarlo.

50 Years Ago: Puerto Rico's Flamingo Terrace Sightings

January 3, 1974: One of the most important cases in the annals of Puerto Rican ufology occurred shortly before 8 pm on this date. It involved children, adults and elderly residents of the Flamingo Terrace urbanization in Bayamón. Our investigation included interviews with 10 different families, amongst which were interviewed three children ages 7 to 10, 6 adults, and one senior citizen. Thus, eyewitness impressions and descriptions of all ages were collected.
At the time in question, Mrs. Lizzy Rodríguez de Maisonet was outside her home when she suddenly became aware of a round object. "It was flat in its lower section, with a protuberance on the upper, resembling an inverted soup dish. Upon seeing the UFO, she called her husband, a former commercial airline pilot, and her neighbor Iris Esther Rivera. They gathered together on Guillermina Street. The neighbor in turn alerted her children - Richard, 10, Raymond, 9 and Ronnie, 8 - who watched alongside the above mentioned adults.
All of these witnesses saw the object move from East to West at a speed slower than that of the aircraft commonly flying in the area as they landed or took off from the Isla Verde International Airport (today Luis Muñoz Marin airport - SC). The watched the UFO until it disappeared behind a tree-covered mountain some 300 meters distant. A brief description of the area is important at this point in view of the subsequent events that took place this evening.
Guillermina Street is the last one in the Flamingo Terrace development, adjacent to a ravine through which a small brook flows. Beyond the brook, a small hillock rises some 30 - perhaps only 20 - meters. This hillock is densely forested on its slopes all the way to the summit, where it flattens out into a small plateau. The Miguel Melendez School is located on this plateau.
After the first sighting, the witnesses returned to their respective homes, except the three Rivera children. At 8:10 pm these children saw the UFO again, from Guillermina Street. The object remained suspended in the air over the mountain in front of them, at an altitude estimated at 10-15 meters above the ground. It was thought at the time that the UFO was directly over the school. According to the children, the UFO looked "like a soup dish upside down" with "a row of brilliant lights on the lower side, which appeared to gyrate rapidly." As the object was stationary, a cylindrical and brilliant light, white in color (with a yellow tinge) came out from the object's lower center part. By this light, the children saw five apparently solid balls of a light-green hue, which descended, the first having the largest diameter. Ten seconds later, the light disappeared, closing the gap or aperture through which the orbs had come.
The children claimed seeing a square gap on the side of the object, through which a dot of blue light could be seen, "like a little light bulb", on or between a base of white light. At this point, the children yelled for their mother and other neighbors to come and watch what they were seeing.
Suddenly, "the square gap became solid like the rest of the surface" of the UFO and the craft began moving away at the same attitude toward the south. It stopped once more, and "a lot of white smoke" issued from the disc's lower section, which seemed to send up dust from the school grounds. This phenomenon lasted some 20 seconds.
At this point the UFO resumed a slow, southward movement, halting over a small house belonging to the Aqueducts and Sewers Authority. This maneuver was witnessed by Carmen Rivera Vargas, Iris Esther Rivera, Lizzy Rodríguez de Maisonet, Carmen Aida Saldaña, Antonio Pagán Saldaña -- relatives and neighbors who had gathered upon hearing the children's cries.
The UFO hovered for a few seconds over the small house in question and then slowly moved away until it disappeared completely. Witnesses affirm that when the initial cries had quietened down, they could hear a slight humming sound from the object.
At all times this object moved slowly, as if it was "observing" things, and remained at an altitude of some 10 to 15 meters, and some 200-300 meters distant from the witnesses.
According to an unconfirmed report, a young boy saw an aerial object apparently over the same general area from the adjacent Sans Souci development. As of the time of this writing, it was not been possible to interview him.
