When scientists first discovered the Australian Burning Mountain in the XVIII century, they mistakenly considered it a volcano. However, in fact, they were faced with a very old coal fire that has not been extinguished for thousands of years.
The object is located on the territory of Australian New South Wales in Australia: at a depth of about 30 meters, coal accumulations have been burning for at least six millennia, the temperature reaches 1000 degrees Celsius.
Despite the fact that the fire is located under the thickness of the earth, the smoke from it rising from the mountain is perfectly visible in the district. It is not known exactly when the flame first appeared here, but it may have happened sometime due to a natural fire or lightning discharge.
Something similar has been found in other parts of the world, for example, in China, the USA and India.
To admire the mysterious phenomenon, you need to visit the Burning Mountain Nature Reserve, which is less than four hours drive from Sydney.
