The Union of reindeer herders of Finland ran an experiment on the painting of the horns of wild reindeer reflective paint, the newspaper reports Atlas Obscura. In this way experts hope to reduce the number of deer collisions with cars.
Such cases in Finland annually about 4 thousand, mainly in the Northern province of Lapland, where reindeer herders live. Accidents occur mainly because drivers do not notice running out into the road deer in the dark — and it is in Northern Finland in the winter clock.
To solve this problem and save the animals, the Finnish reindeer herders previously tried to put reflective paint on the fur of animals. However, this color proved to be ineffective: paint the entire body of animals is impractical, and in some part not visible from all angles. Besides, biologists have worried that the paint will break the water-repellent properties of reindeer fur.
With horns this is not a problem. Glow-in-the headlights horns are great views from either side, and give drivers a clear signal. However, in the spring the deer shed their horns — but then daylight starts to lengthen, so the statistics of such accidents will still go down.
"We have 400 colored horns of deer, and a couple of months waiting for the results," — said Tahkola Juho (Juho Tahkola) from the Union of reindeer herders of Finland.
