Initial data
27 August 1956 about Maccleod (AB, Canada). The witnesses were two Royal canadian air force, who flew four jet aircraft F86 Saber.
The plane was flying West over the Canadian Rocky mountains at a height of 36,000 feet about one hour before sunset. One of the pilots saw a "bright light which was clearly defined and had disc-shaped," that resembled "a shiny silver dollar, flying horizontally" located below the plane but above the thick layer of clouds.
He seemed much brighter the sunlight reflected from clouds. The duration of the observation was estimated from 45 seconds to 3 minutes.
The first pilot noticed an object that reported the observation to the flight Director, and then took the photo on a color Kodachrome.
This case and this picture was subsequently analyzed by Dr. Bruce Maccabee (Maccabee, 1996). Maccabi argued against the idea that this phenomenon is due either to reflection of sunlight by clouds or lightning. Based on available data, Maccabee estimates the brightness of the object (the output power in the spectral range of the film) to a few megawatts.

Original news
August 27, 1956, near McCleod, Alberta, Canada. The witnesses were two Royal Canadian Air Force pilots who were flying in a formation of four F86 Sabre jet aircraft. The planes were flying due west over the Canadian Rockies at 36,000 feet about one hour before sunset. One of the pilots saw a “bright light which was sharply defined and disk-shaped,” that resembled “a shiny silver dollar sitting horizontal,” situated below the planes but above a thick layer of clouds. It appeared to be considerably brighter than sunlight reflecting off the clouds. The duration of the sighting was estimated to be between 45 seconds and 3 minutes. The first pilot to notice the object reported the observation to the flight leader and then took a photograph on a Kodachrome color slide. This case and this photograph were subsequently analyzed by Dr. Bruce Maccabee (Maccabee, 1996). Maccabee has presented an argument against the propositions that the phenomenon is due either to reflection of sunlight by the clouds or to lightning. From the available data, Maccabee estimates the luminosity of the object (the power output within the spectral range of the film) to be many megawatts.
Hypotheses
Illusions associated with the refraction and reflection of light
Reflection is a physical process of interaction of waves or particles with the surface, changing the direction of the wave front at the boundary of two media with different properties, in which the wave front returns into the medium from which it came. The reflection may be specular (that is, such as is observed when using a mirror) or diffuse (in this case, the reflection is not saved the path of the rays from the object, but only the energy component of the luminous flux) depending on the nature of the surface.
The spires of the skyscrapers, the mountains, the pipe above the clouds
Part of skyscrapers, pipes, which they smoke, the high parts of mountains and other high areas of the landscape and buildings towering above the clouds or mist, may be mistaken for UFOs or ghosts.
Most often the effect occurs when observing from the plane, but sometimes, for example, at low clouds can be observed from earth.
