Two people on Thursday said they saw a large reptilian bird while driving on Interstate 80 through Nevada. Bud Davis, a 54-year-old IT executive from California, told Cryptozoology News that he and a relative were driving to Winnemucca when they came across the unusual sight.
"We noticed a creature in the middle of the highway," he said of the June 11 incident. "It was about 3 feet (0.9 m) off the ground and about 20 feet (6 m) from our car on the driver's side," he continued.
Davis believes the animal only started to take off just before his car approached around 11 p.m., as it was reportedly having trouble getting off the ground.
He was struggling to gain enough lift to fly over the car as soon as he saw us. The creature's wings only crossed the front windshield by a few inches, so we both saw the creature very clearly as it flew through the front of our car from left to right, out of sight.
The man describes a bird of gray color with a long and thin neck. Its head, according to Davis, was also thin and sharp with a long beak. He remembers that he had a "crest"on the top of his head.
"The body was hump-like and seemed heavy. Thin, long legs. The wings were diamond-shaped with claws at the end of each wing. Long, thin tail. From the tip of the beak to the tip of the tail, it was longer than the windshield, so we estimated a total length of 4-5 feet (1.2-1.5 m). The wingspan was wide - in the open position, the left wing tip was located behind the hood of our car. The lower half of the right wing was not visible, it was covered by the roof of the car, so we estimated the width from tip to tip at 6-7 feet, " Davis explained.
The CIO believes the bird is similar to a pterosaur, a flying reptile that is believed to have lived during the Jurassic Period and became extinct by the end of the Cretaceous Period, about 65 million years ago.
Thunderbird, also known as Roc, is a nomenclature used by Native Americans to refer to bird-like creatures with reptilian features that are believed to be related to extinct reptiles.

Its head, says Davis, was also thin and pointy with a long beak. He remembers it had a “crest” on the top of its head. “The body was hump-like, and appeared to be heavy. Thin long legs. The wings were diamond-shaped, and had claws at the end of each wing. A long thin tail. From tip of beak to tip of tail, it was longer than the windshield was wide so we’d estimate the overall length at 4-5 feet.
