Late at night on November 15, 1966, two married couples Scarberry and Mallett were driving in the vicinity of an abandoned ammunition factory located seven miles from Point Pleasant in West Virginia. When they reached the factory gate, they noticed a strange glow emanating, as it seemed to them, from the generator set. However, after stopping the car and looking closely, they realized that the two red lights were not from the generator — they belonged to a living being.

People managed to notice that it looked like a human, but it was six and a half or seven feet tall (1.9-2.1 m), with wings folded behind its back. Noticing them, the creature turned around and headed towards them. Startled, Scarberry and the Malletts jumped into the car and ran away. The creature spread its wings and rushed in pursuit of the car. It chased the fugitives all the way to the city limits, and its speed exceeded 100 miles per hour.
