Features/Characteristics: rapidly rising pale orange light
The observation lasted approx. 3 minutes. Clear sky – the moon has not yet risen.
The three observers were looking to the east and towards the sea over Cape Kochi in the direction of Okhop or Eastern Cape. They observed a bright pale orange light (similar to the color of orange street lights) that looked bigger than a bright planet like Venus. The light appeared high in the sky and at first was stationary, and then suddenly moved to the left, and then quickly descended until it disappeared from view. They described the speed at which he was moving as exceeding the speed of the aircraft and vertical descent.
One of the observers twice saw unusual lights in the sky in the Wakatane area and reported them to a local radio station. He stated: "Once — a riddle, twice — curiosity, three times — an anomaly. I encourage others to report their observations."

The three observers were looking east and seaward over Kohi Point in the direction of Ohope or East Cape. They observed a bright pale-orange light (rather like the colour of orange sodium streetlights) that looked bigger than a bright planet like Venus. The light appeared high in the sky and stationary at first, before then moving suddenly to the left and then rapidly descending until lost from view. They described the speed at which it moved as faster than a plane and a vertical descent.
One of the observers has seen unusual lights in the sky on two previous occasions in the Whakatane area and reported them to the local radio station. He stated, “Once is a mystery, twice is a curiosity, three times is an anomaly. I would encourage others to report their sightings.”
