Initial data
Date: Wednesday, January 14, 2009
Time: around 22:45.
Location: Kaikoura, South Island
Features/Characteristics: abnormal orange light confuses astronomer
Description:
A clear moonlit night. The duration of aiming is about two seconds.
The witness and her two children were on a hilltop in Kaikoura, watching the sky. The group's guide pointed to the rising Moon and the Milky Way.
The witness heard a crack and, looking up, saw an orange fire the size of a thumbnail with a tail of white sparks, the distance to the observer was unknown, but she assumed that he was far above the ocean. At first, the witness thought she was looking at some kind of fireworks, but then realized that this could not be, given its location. There was a sudden flash that lit up the sky (similar to the brightness of lightning) for a moment, followed by a faint "pop" and crackle, and the light suddenly disappeared.
