Initial data
A woman (an employee of the Giprosteklo Institute) observing an unusual phenomenon over Leningrad in the late evening of September 24, 1979. She told me:
"At about 23, I saw from the window of my apartment, facing the south-west side, a hanging ball painted bright red. The apparent size of the ball was slightly less than the diameter of the lunar disk (at the zenith). The viewing angle was about 30 degrees to the horizon. The contours of the ball stood out very clearly against the dark sky. In its part of the world, the red contour of the ball seemed to blur into orange, the yellow color had a kind of halo-crown.
After a very short period of time, a second slightly smaller and also colored bright red separated from this ball, which began to descend. Almost simultaneously, the first ball began to move to the right of the observer, after 1-2 seconds both objects suddenly "went out". This phenomenon was observed for 5-6 seconds."
