Great comet of 1680 the Comet Kirch/Newton's Comet is the first comet discovered through a telescope. Discovered by the German astronomer Gottfried Kirkham 14 Nov 1680 according to the Julian calendar. Became one of the brightest comets of the seventeenth century.
Was visible to the naked eye even during the day, and was distinguished by a long tail. Flying at a distance of 0.42 a.e. from Earth on 30 November 1680, with the smallest perihelion 0,0062.e. (930,000 km) on 18 December 1680, reached maximum brightness on 29 December, and then started pulling away. Last observed on 19 March 1681.
