On Saturday, December 3, 1903, a local resident, Thomas Holland, at 7 a.m., went to work and fell into a hole that suddenly formed on the pavement directly beneath his feet. 56-year-old candle maker with a cry fell down, and hasn't seen. Rescuers thought the man fell into the old shaft to a depth of about 40 meters, filled with poisonous gas, and refused to come down.
