Tony Ferguson, 33, couldn't believe his eyes when the figure with glowing eyes appeared in the window at Hurst Castle in Hampshire.
The personal trainer tried to debunk the sighting, checking the window to see if it could have been a prankster trying to scare him.
But when he examined the spot, Tony realised the tunnel was too narrow for anyone to fit down - and now believes he saw the former caretaker of the 16th century artillery fort.
Tony said: "I didn’t see the figure until I watched the footage back but the whole time I was in the castle I felt something watching me.
"While we were there I really felt like something was following me from room to room but your mind can play tricks on you so I tried to ignore it.
"But when I watched the video back I was shocked. It’s quite a scary looking figure."
He said he had known something was in the room with him, but added: "To see it manifest itself like that is incredible."
The young man said he believed he had encountered the spirit before at the castle in 2017.
Startled Tony said: "I think it is the same spirit I encountered before at the castle. Last time I visited, it appeared like a white mist but this time it obviously had the energy to actually take form.
