A recent and compelling observation took place in a small village in Suurbraak, in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Aldo Pecker reported in the New Zealand Herald:
Villager Daniel Cupido said he and his friends were near the river at about 23:30 when they heard something like someone "hitting the wall." Cupid went to the sound and found a figure "similar to the figure of a white woman with long black hair, who is beating in the water."
Cupid said that he tried to help the woman, but the woman made a "strange sound", which Dina, Cupid's mother, said was so sad, "my heart couldn't stand it". The creatures are described as Kaaiman, or half-human-half-fish, living in deep reservoirs.
Suurbraak tourism officer Maggie Jantjis said she knew the people who saw Kaayman well and that they did not abuse alcohol, and vouches for the group's credibility.
