The headlights on the collision course with the hill, which suddenly "bounced" back, appeared in the shape of a diamond and zigzagged across the sky. We were returning to our bach (seaside holiday home) in a remote farming/coastal area in Northland, New Zealand, from a party in the nearest town.
I was just like death, because I had sprained my ankle badly the night before and didn't want to "party" and make things worse (there was a good band there, and I usually like to dance), so I only drank two cans of pre-mixed bourbon and Coke for about 7 hours before I took the car to the people who were messing around). We had two cars in total.
Our hill is located at the top of a hill that offers a 360 degree view, but there are huge windows at the front of this place that look directly out over the Pacific Ocean (directly to the east). There's about 400 meters of land between us and the beach, and it's completely flat - the top of our hill is probably about 5 or 6 stories high ... As it is a farming / rural community, the coast here is relatively deserted and there was only one house between us and the beach, the old homestead where my husband grew up - about 100m from the hill between us and the beach. There were no roads, although a "farm trail" leads to the beach.
October in New Zealand is still pretty cold, although it's officially spring, and we were all huddled on the deck waiting for my partner to open the door when we all noticed two headlights coming straight at us from the beach / sea side.
We quickly realized it wasn't a car, as we were at eye level with those headlights, and they were a little bigger. The strange thing is that there was no noise, and they "crept" to us at a fairly close distance, and we did not notice it. Our first reaction was that it was a plane or helicopter (do they have headlights?) and they were flying on a collision course with the hill (and with us!) as they seemed to be getting closer and closer.
We were all talking about it when my husband finally opened the door and we all spilled in. I remember telling them to quickly turn on the lights so they could see it was a hill and a house and not hit us.
We turned on the lights, and we all sat around the breakfast counter that overlooked the sea. I went straight to the window with one of the other girls and was startled to see that the " headlights "were almost within reach, but then in the" blink " of my eyes, they suddenly jumped back to land somewhere over the sea . At the moment they were barely discernible as "headlights", and then suddenly became more diamond-shaped.
I confirmed with my friend that I didn't see anything, and we tried to get others to confirm what we all saw. It was funny, because they all sat down, opened their drinks, and seemed to forget about the headlights that were flying right at us a few minutes ago.
We tried to get their attention and point out that the headlights suddenly went from being about to hit us, that they were sitting way back, and they all went out, yeah, yeah, you guys are not okay! Anyway, knowing that I was absolutely NOT out of it (maybe a little tired), I decided to go outside to get a better look, as it was hard to know if I was seeing things correctly by looking out the window and shielding my eyes from the light inside.
It was pitch dark outside, except for a few dim stars and that bright white light that kept flashing red and suddenly shifting. I got a little scared and made my girlfriend go outside too. We seemed to be the only ones who were interested or remembered what had just happened ... When we got outside, I was pretty sure it was a diamond, although it had moved even further back, but still at eye level. Suddenly, it zigzagged from side to side and seemed to get closer, and then settled right in front of us, but even further away.
I really thought my eyes were deceiving me, and I told my friend... did you see that? She said yes, and, not wanting to lead her, I said, what did you see? and it is described in the zigzag movement too. This thing must have been moving fast, moving from left to right out of our field of view and back again several times in a matter of seconds.
At this point, we took the binoculars and, putting my hands on the fence to make sure I wasn't swaying, I tried to see something. It was too far away and only confirmed that it had a vague diamond shape, it was really bright and sometimes seemed to flash red, but now it was far enough away that even with binoculars it was difficult to distinguish.
I gave up. We started going through everything that could be, and logic suggested that it wasn't any of them, i.e. not a satellite as they orbit the Earth in a horizontal plane, not a star as we had never seen it before, and they tended to pass overhead as night receded into day (by the way, I looked and looked and never saw anything remotely like this light at any time of the year, never again) and were determined to keep an eye on it and at some point began to feel that maybe it was watching us!
From time to time, we would come back and tell the others that it was still there, but they would tell us that we were observing something. After that, it zigzagged several times and sometimes seemed to get closer (and we were ready to run inside), but always it stopped outside of our field of really discernible vision.
We decided to keep an eye on him until he left, and finally he sat down at a point that we realized was the horizon when the sun was rising, and stayed there until about 8: 00. When the sky lit up, it maintained its brightness, while the stars dimmed and completely went out by about 7 a.m.
We watched the family in the house below rise, and soon assumed that even if the farmers / early risers were actually looking up at the sky, if they didn't know where to look, they would probably miss this object or dismiss it as a star. By this time, we had "landmarks" by which to measure the object - a few small islands near the horizon. When the sun rose, we were able to confirm that it was just above and to the right of what was on the right.
By now, we were tired and nothing "exciting" was happening for some time, so we went in and out about every half hour to check in… Around 8: 00, we realized that after sitting on the stationery for most of the night, the object was now moving up, back, and to the left at a significant speed.
We could still see it because we knew where to look, but despite the brightness, it got smaller as we got farther away. By about 10: 00, we could still see it getting smaller and further away and finally gave up, noting that it had moved a lot from its original position... instead of being just above and to the right of the right island, it was now significantly closer to the left of the left island (taking into account that the islands are located straight ahead and straight to the east) and instead of the horizon was high in the sky and was a simple needle of bright light, brighter than the largest and brightest star.
Over the years, we've shared this experience with a lot of people, and not all of them have scoffed. I didn't know who to tell, so I didn't know. Some people even told me their stories about UFOs. One guy was driving with his wife to the shops after work, when, leaving the city, he noticed a multi-storey, brightly lit object hovering over the sea.
They stopped and looked at him, as well as at the car behind them, before he disappeared. He is disappointed that they left without checking with the driver of the other car. Another was an airline pilot who looked at me in horror when I asked him if he believed in UFOs.
I went on with my story anyway, after which he relaxed and, realizing that I wasn't going to call him crazy or make him lose his job, he told me about a time near New Caledonia, an island in the Pacific Ocean, when his commercial flight and an American plane were coming in to land and reported an unidentified object sitting between them. It was not visible on radar on the ground or on their planes, but the cabin crews of both planes visually identified it and began discussing it while sitting between them, at which point it suddenly accelerated straight up in the air from a stationary position, to an extremely high speed, and disappeared.
Another friend in charge of air traffic control told me that something once crossed his radar and disappeared from the screen in a matter of seconds - many in the control tower witnessed it, and no one can explain it, as the speed at which it was flying was much greater than anything known at the time.

Summary: Headlights on a collision course with a hill which suddenly “jumped” back, appeared diamond shaped and zig zagged across the sky We were returning to our bach (beachside holiday home) in a remote farming/coastal area in Northland, New Zealand from a party at the nearest town. I was as straight as a die as I had badly sprained my ankle the night before and didn’t want to “party hard” and make it worse (there was a good band and usually I love to dance) so had drank only two cans of premixed bourbon and cola over a period of about 7 hours prior to driving a car load of people back to my place who had been indulging. Anyway, knowing that I was absolutely NOT out of it (may be a bit tired) I decided to go outside to have a better look as it was hard to know whether I was seeing things properly looking through the window and shielding my eyes from the light inside. It was pitch black outside except for a few dim stars and this bright white light which every now and then seemed to glow red and move about suddenly. I felt a wee bit scared and got my girlfriend to come outside too. We seemed to be the only ones interested or who remembered what had just happened… Once we got outside I was almost certain that the shape was a diamond although it had moved even further back, still at eye level though. Every now and again we would go back in and tell the others it was still there but they told us we were seeing things. It zig zagged several times after that and occasionally appeared to come closer (and we got ready to run inside) but always it settled just beyond our field of truly distinguishable vision.
We decided to keep an eye on it until it went away and finally it sat at a point which we realised was the horizon as the sun came up, and there it stayed until about 8.00 am. As the sky lit up it maintained its brightness while the stars dimmed and faded out completely by about 7.00 am. We could still see it because we knew where to look but, although bright, it was becoming much smaller as it moved away. By about 10.00 am we could still see it getting smaller and further away and finally giving up, noted that it had moved a lot from its original position… instead of just above and to the right of the right island, it was now considerably to the left of the left island (bearing in mind the islands are situated straight ahead and directly to the east) and instead of near the horizon, was high in the sky, and a mere pinprick of bright light, having at first been of a size considerably larger and brighter than the largest and brightest star.
Over the years, we have talked of this experience to numerous people and not all have scoffed. I didn’t know who to report it to so didn’t. A few people even related their UFO stories to me. One guy was on his way from shopping with his wife after work, when coming out of the city, noticed a many storied, brightly lit object hovering over the sea. They pulled over and looked at it, as did the car behind them, before it disappeared. He is disappointed that they then drove off without verifying it with the driver of the other car. Another was an airline pilot who looked at me in horror when I asked him if he believed in UFO’s. I proceeded to tell my story anyway, at which point he relaxed, and realising that I wasn’t going to cite him mad or cause him to lose his job, he told of a time near New Caledonia, an island in the Pacific, when his commercial flight and an American plane were both circling to land and reported an unidentified object sitting between them. It didn’t show on the radar on land or their planes, but the cockpit crews of both planes had visually identified it and started discussing it sitting between them, at that point it suddenly accelerated straight up in the air from a motionless position, at extremely high speed, and disappeared. Another friend who does air traffic control told me that something once crossed his radar and went off the screen in a matter of seconds – many in the control tower witnessed it and none can explain it as the speed at which it was flying was so much greater than anything known at that time.
