In response to a letter to the editor from the author of the original material, which was published in the Moncton, New Brunswick Times & Transcript newspaper, on August 4, I received the following email from a member of the Greater Moncton Paranormal Society:
"Times have changed, as has the city. However, the memories, especially the ones I'm going to tell you, have not changed. It was 2000, late autumn. One evening I was the designated driver for a group of college buddies (exact date unknown) when it was my job to check out the group. I didn't have a car at the time, but one of my friends had one, and he was with them that night. The job was simple, go meet them all night to see if they want me to take them home. I had to walk from a nearby college in the city (where I lived at the time), down Main Street, to two separate bars, where they said they would be all night.
It was a cool autumn night, but the sky was almost completely clear, and the sky was illuminated by the light of an almost full moon. I went to the first bar too, none of the guys were there, so I kept going to the next one, known as JR's (still there today). I met with some of the guys and they said they were fine and they didn't need a trip. My friend Eric, who asked me to be a DD, was not feeling very well, so he decided not to drink, but still went for a walk with friends.
We noticed that one of the guys wasn't there, so I said I'd go check at the first bar if I missed him and help him if needed. Apart from the noise from the fading bar in the background, the night was peaceful and beautiful. As soon as I checked the first bar and couldn't find our missing friend (it turned out that he was sick in the bathroom of another bar most of the night), I decided to go home.
The first bar (known as The River Restaurant) was under construction, and a new patio was being built on the left side of the rear deck, from where you could watch the St. John River and the valley around it. Something prompted me to go take a look at the deck, as it was almost completed and not closed to the public. I saw a beautiful maple tree, its empty branches lit up by the light of the moon. The tree was huge, and the image of almost countless branches zigzagging everywhere, each branch and twig illuminated by the soft blue-white reflection of the moon, was mesmerizing.
I stood there for a couple of moments, listening to the music of the bar as people came and went, opening and closing the door in the process. In addition, an almost eerie calm reigned over the city. I look at the tree and through it I look at the incredible and huge stars that were visible that night. Then, out of nowhere, something to my right, downstream, caught my attention.
In the sky, I would say no more than a couple thousand feet (but I'm not an expert here) there were 5 very bright neon pink lights. They stood side by side and vibrated as if it was one solid object moving at the same time. I was confused, but fascinated by this strange object. I could see through the gaps between the pink lights, as well as the distant stars behind them.
I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I turned my whole body towards the object, which was still vibrating, gently but noticeably. Then it looked like he knew or saw that I saw it, because the vibrations stopped completely, the light stopped moving, but only for a couple of seconds. After that, the object took off in the form of a crescent, only never gaining or losing altitude. However, when he did, the lights merged into one as he was moving away, and when he approached me again, they split into 5 separate light sources again.
Then he came even closer to me, almost over my head. The courtyard, the ground, my clothes and everything else turned pale pink as the object illuminated the surroundings with its radiance. I had enough time, and I remembered thinking "hit or run", should I run or stay? Curiosity got the better of me, especially because I've always been fascinated by the paranormal, so I didn't move except to duck down and cover my head, thinking the object was going to hit me or something.
As soon as he flew overhead, he stopped again as far as possible. This object didn't make a sound at all, I couldn't see any figures except for the 5 separate light sources themselves. Now it was almost 50% bigger than it was when I first saw it, and I wanted to make sure I knew it was there.
Suddenly he flew across the sky, over my left shoulder, to the northeast, over the river, hills and mountains beyond it. When he did, the lights merged back into one and shrank in size as he receded until he completely disappeared from view.
The whole event took about a minute.
Of course, I was shocked and then ran home. My heart was pounding and I couldn't calm down or fall asleep, so I stayed up until 5 a.m. looking at the stars, hoping they would come back or I would see something else. I was unlucky.
I have studied and read countless stories about UFOs and paranormal phenomena throughout my life, and I remember noticing that I didn't waste any time, as I remembered to keep an eye on my watch that night before and after I checked mine all over my body, when I returned home to the mirror, there were no traces, scratches, unexplained anomalies, and I know for sure that I was stone sober when it happened. I wasn't too tired beforehand and still can't explain what and why I saw what I saw that night.
The next day I was talking to a group of friends at college, no one saw or heard anything. Some, of course, thought I was crazy and drinking when I said I was going to be a driver. Several friends believed me, in particular, one who convinced me to correct this story many years ago and send it to the world-famous UFO researcher Stanton Friedman. I found out that he lives in Fredericton, New York, by searching for him on the Internet, and sent him my story. I never heard an answer from him, but this moment is forever remembered by me from that night. I've never seen anything like this in our sky before."DM

The curiosity got the better of me, especially because I have always been fascinated with the paranormal, so I did not move, except to duck and cover my head, thinking the object was going to hit me or something.
As soon as it got overhead, it stopped again, silent as can be. No sound came from this object at all, I could not see any shapes over than the 5 individual lights themselves. It was now almost 50% larger than from when I first saw it, and it wanted to make sure I knew it was there.
Suddenly, it shot across the sky, over my left shoulder, northeasterly, over the river, the hills, and mountains beyond. As it did this, the lights once again merged into one, and shrunk in size as it was getting farther away, until it was completely gone out of sight.
The entire event took roughly a minute.
I was shaken up needless to say and ran home after that. My heart was racing and could not calm down or go to sleep, so I ended up staying up until about 5 am that morning staring at the stars, hoping it would return, or I would see something else. I had no such luck.
