Initial data
July 10 , 2002 Location: Sudbury, Ontario.
While waiting for the bus on the way to work, I looked at the clear blue sky and noticed that at first I noticed a seagull floating along the thermal streams over the center of Sudbury, along with other birds. When this thing made a slight turn, it seemed to change shape and turned into a white spot - like a round one, but with uneven edges - just as if you were looking at the base of a somewhat round object.
He was heading east towards New Sudbury, and as I continued to watch him, he then looked like a very dark gray flying wing or a flat piece of metal. Looking at it from behind, there seemed to be a red tint on its back, followed by a very bright light when the Sun was reflected on the left surface. I looked at my watch, which showed 10:15.
If I'm right, it took this thing from one and a half to two minutes to cover that distance. Maybe it was an ultralight, but I didn't see anything (the cockpit) hanging from this "wing". When I get to work, I call the control room at Sudbury Airport to tell them about it and ask if they have any flights arriving at this time. All they said was that they don't necessarily get flight plans from those who fly ultralight planes... What I knew. I have good eyesight ... I know I saw something strange. Binoculars would be useful to "bring in" an object, but my 7 x 35 is too bulky to carry them all the time, so I bought a small compact pair that I will carry with me... Well, at least when I go to work.
ADDENDUM:
On Thursday, September 5, at about 19:40, when I was waiting for my bus to go home, an ultralight glider flew over my head at an altitude of about 600 feet. I watched him turn high above the New Sudbury Mall parking lot, heading southeast until he was out of sight. At this distance, it did not look like an unknown object that I noticed on July 10. This confirmed the fact that the object I saw could not be an ultralight aircraft... which would be the only logical explanation for this if the object was an ordinary airplane.
Original news
July 10, 2002: Daytime sighting. Location: Sudbury, Ontario. While waiting for the bus on my way to work, I was looking up at the clear blue sky and I noticed what first looked to be a seagull riding the thermals above downtown Sudbury, along with other birds. As this thing made a slight turn, it seemed to change shape and became a white smudge -- sort of circular but with an irregular edge -- just like looking at the bottom of a somewhat round object. It headed to the east towards New Sudbury, and as I kept watching it, it then looked like a very dark grey flying wing or flat piece of metal. Looking at it from behind, there seemed to be a red tinge on its rear, followed by a very bright glare as the Sun reflected on the left-hand surface. I looked at my watch which indicated 10:15 a.m. If I'm right, it took this thing about a minute and a half to two minutes to travel that distance. Now, it might have been an ultra-light, but I could not see anything (the cockpit) hanging from this "wing". Once I got to work, I phone the control tower at the Sudbury airport to tell them about this and ask them if they had any incoming flights for that time. All they said was that they don't necessarily get flight plans from anyone flying ultra-lights...which I knew. My eyesight is good...I know I saw something weird. Binoculars would have been helpful in "bringing in" the object, but my 7 x 35's are too bulky to carry around all the time, so I bought a small compact pair which I will carry with me...well, at least when I go to work.
ADDENDUM: On Thursday, September 5, at around 7:40 p.m. while waiting for my bus to go home, an ultralight glider flew over my head at approximately 600 feet. I watched it as it veered high above the New Sudbury shopping centre parking lot, heading south-east, until it went out of sight. At that distance, it looked nothing like the unknown object I spotted on July 10. This confirmed the fact that the object I had seen could not have been an ultralight aircraft...which would have been the only logical explanation for it, had the object been a conventional aircraft.
