Initial data
On February 3, 1995, two soldiers of the Russian army, privates Shepin and Zhabanov, were on guard at a military base of fuel and lubricants near the town of Gusev, not far from the Polish border. Both soldiers claim that for several minutes there was an unknown object shining with a bright greenish-blue light over the territory of the base at a low altitude. This is how Private Zhabanov described this case in his report:
"On February 3, 1995, from 22.00 to 24.00, I was part of the guard at post No. 2, located in the southeastern part of the base. At about 24.00, I descended from the observation tower and, making a detour of my territory, headed towards the zone guarded by sentries from post No. 1. After walking about fifteen meters, I saw a glowing greenish object above me, at a height of about twenty meters.
At first it seemed to me that the object looked like a large signal rocket. However, he flew horizontally, along the base fence, and behind him stretched a bright fiery tail, like a comet. At some point in time, a smaller part of the object separated from the object, which began to fall down. The remaining part continued to move away, its glow became less bright, it seemed to shrink in size and soon disappeared from sight."
