Initial data
Last night, after 22:00, a strange high-altitude phenomenon with strange characteristics was observed over the western part of La Plata.
There are several photos of this event from the vicinity of Olmos. At the same time, reports were received from various parts of the southern part of Greater Buenos Aires describing the same thing: two flames, very large, remained motionless for several minutes in an almost overcast sky, although, according to witnesses, several stars were visible in the corresponding places.
At first, it was assumed that it could be the "torches" of the YPF refinery reflecting against the overcast sky (as was indeed the case in other cases), but the version was discarded.
Original news
Argentina: A Mass Sighting?
By Luis Burgos
After 10 pm last night, we were alerted by Walter Romero (FAO La Plata) regarding a high-altitude phenomenon with bizarre characteristics over the western area of La Plata. Friends of his even submitted a few photographs of the event as seen from the vicinity of Olmos. Simultaneously, reports were received from various parts of southern Greater Buenos Aires, describing the same: Two tongues of flame, very large, remaining static for a few minutes, in nearly overcast skies, although a few stars were visible according to the witnesses respective locations. What we at first thought might be the "torches" of the YPF refinery, reflecting against the overcast skies (as has indeed been the case in other instances) was discarded.
But what was disconcerting was the fact that a similar phenomenon was reported in various parts of Mexico. Theories abound to suit all tastes, ranging from a supernova explosion to the re-entry of space junk, or the luminous gassing of a launch, including UFOs, obviously. We believe that the appropriate explanations will be received in coming hours. Everything is being checked.

Recently at night two bright lights were to be seen at La Plata city in Argentina, thousands of people congregated to attest to it, it even caught media attention. We still aren't sure what it was or why it happened. It was actually surreal.
Hypotheses
Light sources on clouds
Lasers, searchlights, car headlights and other light sources of sufficient power can form a column of light in a dusty or foggy atmosphere, various patterns on low clouds, fog or haze. Also, the rays can highlight parts of the cloud, objects or birds, giving them bizarre shapes.
Searchlights can shine with one beam, several. They can be stationary, move, and also form spinning carousels on the clouds, which can change shape and color.
It often seems that the light source is located at the point where the beam hits the cloud, and not vice versa.

Investigation
According to the website eldia.com - these objects turned out to be the fire of petrochemical catalysts reflected on low clouds. The towers themselves were poorly visible due to the fog that enveloped the region last night. YPF reported that "in the coming hours we will carry out the last maneuvers to put the catalytic converter unit B into operation after the shutdown on Sunday, so there may be an increase in flow in the flare, which will last for a short period of time."
In the comments on reddit.com we found photos with mysterious lights that show the source of this reflection:
