Initial data
Date: Thursday, December 30, 2010
Time: 21:45
Location: Waikawa Beach, between Levin and Otaki, North Island.
Features/Characteristics: large bright stationary orange light
Description:
Some kind of drifting cumulus cloud at an altitude of 2-3000 feet. The duration of aiming is one to two minutes.
The witness observed a bright brick-red glow in the sky, 2-3 times larger than Venus. The witness at first thought it was a plane with landing lights, but the color was different and there was no beam.
The light was stationary, had a specific point source and did not display navigation lights like an airplane. The witness used a small pair of binoculars and then binoculars to observe the light. Subsequently, Cloud temporarily obscured the light 2-3 times before finally completely obscuring the light. The light maintained the same intensity for 2 minutes of observation. There was no sound/noise associated with aiming.
Ufocus NZ Comment:
The witness is a private pilot with 52 years of flying experience. He is also an amateur astronomer interested in physics. The witness had never seen such a light in the sky before in all his years of flying experience. He discussed this observation with an astronomer who had previously worked at the Carter Observatory, who also had no explanation for this light.

Description:
Some drifting cumulus cloud at 2-3000 feet. Duration of sighting one to two minutes.
The witness observed a brilliant brick-red coloured light in the sky, 2-3 times the size of Venus. The witness at first thought it was an aircraft with landing lights, but the colour was different and there was no beam.
The light was stationary, had a definite point source, and displayed no navigation lights, as an aircraft would. The witness used a small pair of opera glasses, then binoculars, to observe the light. Cloud subsequently obscured the light temporarily 2-3 times, before finally obscuring the light altogether. The light maintained the same intensity throughout the 2 minutes of the sighting. There was no sound/noise associated with the sighting.
Ufocus NZ comment: The witness is a private pilot with 52 years flying experience. He is also an amateur astronomer, with an interest in physics. The witness had never before observed a light in the sky like this one in all his years of flying experience. He discussed the sighting with an astronomer, formerly of Carter Observatory, who also had no explanation for the light.
