Suren Obosyan, Junior Researcher at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. writes to the Commission on the:
In 1979, during an ethnographic expedition in the Noyemberyan district of the Armenian SSR in the village of Kohp, I recorded the following story from Avakian Gevorg Aleksanovich (born in 1896), which, I think, will interest your commission.
G. Avakian at the age of 8-9: (i.e., around 1904-1905, he returned to the village from the Kozman winter garden, located 4 km away. He was in a hurry to get home before dark, but about 1 km away. darkness overtook him from the village. He was leading a donkey loaded with firewood on a rope.
Suddenly, Avakian's attention was attracted by a star that seemed to descend directly on him. The size of the star was rapidly increasing, and what the boy first took for a star hung over his head, taking the form of a disk with a diameter of 30 cm (the informant pointed to the lid of a medium-sized saucepan). This "round thing" did not glow itself, it was just visible. Suddenly, a dazzling light began to emanate from it, so that a platform with a diameter of 15 m with Avakian and his donkey in the center turned out to be brightly illuminated as if by sunlight (the informant here noted that at that time he did not know about electricity or airplanes).
The donkey jumped aside in fright, but Avakian did not let go of the rope, fearing to lose the only living support at that moment. However, the light followed them, so he and the donkey stayed in the illuminated circle all the time.
Finally, the boy managed to stop the donkey. He doesn't remember how long they stood like that, illuminated by a bright light.
Suddenly the light went out. The "round thing" just as it descended, began to rise and soon got lost among the stars.
Avakian soon told the village priest about this amazing case, but he could not give him an explanation.
