The retired teacher Matrosova Ekaterina Alekseevna writes to the Commission on AYA:

It was January 7, 1936, at about 18 o'clock. I remember this time well, because what my friend and I happened to see greatly shocked me, and throughout my life I do not find an explanation for this.

At that time I was studying in the 7th grade, at the beginning of January we had a vacation. we lived then on a farm near the village of Chashnitsa in the Nagorny Preslavsky district of the Yaroslavl region.

On January 7, in the afternoon I came to my friend Lyudmila Stepanova (we studied together), and in the evening I went home. It was 1.5 km from the village to our house.

It was getting dark, and I was afraid to go alone, because behind the village, about 300 m from the road, there was a forest in which there could be wolves (I was always afraid of them).

Immediately from the village I went up a hill, then, after about 200 meters, the descent began, and there was a ravine. before reaching the ravine 100 meters, we stopped and began to talk. I asked Luda about something, but she did not answer, but somehow frightened stretched out her hand to me and stared intently in the direction of the forest.

I immediately turned around and saw the following picture: against the background of the frozen forest, a fire was blazing, about 2.5-3 m high, and 20-25 m long. It seemed: the forest was burning. Frightened, we ran back to the village, keeping our eyes on the fire. The fire lasted for about 1-2 minutes, then somehow stretched upwards (it seemed to us that it slid over the Christmas tree), then sank down, turned into a fireball, slightly larger than a football, and began to move away into the depths of the forest.

Then we did not see what happened to him, since we were descending from the mountain and this ball was covered by the mountain.

Running to the village, I found my brother and asked him to take me home.

I told him about what I saw, but he doubted it and suggested that we thought it was all out of fear.

When we walked back past this place (it was 10-15 minutes after what we saw), the forest was still standing in frost, as if there was no fire.

But we saw the flame, and we saw it together!? My friend is still alive and can confirm this.

 - What color was the flame? - whitish-yellow. There was no smoke.

Our teacher explained that it was a gas that escaped from the ground, which, when combined with the oxygen of the air, ignited.

But there was no smoke in the forest (the gas escaped in the forest, the branches would have burned!). And frost remained intact on the trees! What was it?
