Initial data
At the end of August 1978, at about 9 p.m., the witness was driving his parents in a car along the Yegoryevsky highway to Moscow. The cloudy, gloomy day was ending. It was getting dark. Suddenly, ahead, to the left of the car's course, under a layer of clouds, passengers saw a dazzling white ball (like burning magnesium), the size of a cherry, if held at arm's length in front of them.
leaving the car, they got out and watched. The ball hung motionless for 15 minutes, then "swelled" in a few seconds, spread out in all directions, forming a new shape similar to a plum. The color of the "plum" turned mauve. and instantly, something seemed to "flow" from the side walls of it. The color of the runoff zone was an average between the color of the "plum" and the night sky.
As soon as the "runoff" began, the object began to shrink, blur, and disappear. 20-25 seconds after the formation of the "plum", the object disappeared.
the stars in the cloudy sky were not visible at all. There was no noise.
Hypotheses
Light sources on clouds
Lasers, searchlights, car headlights and other light sources of sufficient power can form a column of light in a dusty or foggy atmosphere, various patterns on low clouds, fog or haze. Also, the rays can highlight parts of the cloud, objects or birds, giving them bizarre shapes.
Searchlights can shine with one beam, several. They can be stationary, move, and also form spinning carousels on the clouds, which can change shape and color.
It often seems that the light source is located at the point where the beam hits the cloud, and not vice versa.
