Initial data
On March 15, 1978, a UFO was observed in the area north of Leningrad. For the first time, a UFO was spotted around 18-30 - 19-00 at an altitude of 20-25 degrees above the horizon.
The UFO moved from east to west at a constant altitude at a speed of 60-40 degrees per hour, passed about 30-40 degrees and disappeared. A few minutes later, the UFO appeared again, for another 10-15 minutes. In total, there were about 5-7 such disappearances and UFO sightings in time from 20 to 3 minutes. The interval between appearances is no more than 10 minutes. The UFO did not necessarily appear in the same place and not in the place of the previous disappearance, but at the same altitude. In general, during the maneuvers, UFOs were not observed in height. The first 2 times the UFO moved slowly from east to west, the third time the movement was reversed at the same speed. In general, the speed was almost not perceived by eye, but for enough time it was possible to notice that the UFO had moved (in this case, you can draw an analogy with the movements of the minute hand of the clock). In some cases, the UFO remained motionless.
The UFO was a bright star-shaped object, brighter than any star and perfectly visible in the daytime sky. The light from the "star" was scattered on an X-shaped transparent dome. The glow was flickering in both brightness and color: from ruby red to yellow, sometimes with blue sparks.
The flicker period is on the order of units of hertz. The color itself seemed unnatural in the sense that it is difficult to come up with an analogy for such a source. Most of all, it looked like an electric spark or another discharge, but more red in color. The appearance and disappearance of UFOs was not instantaneous: the light faded or flared up in about 2-3 seconds.
Another interesting feature of UFOs has been observed. Next to the UFO, a bright glowing ball of red or orange color sometimes flashed for a split second. The balloon was located at a distance of several degrees from the UFO itself and no jumpers with the object were observed. The flashes always occurred below the UFO: once a flash was seen shortly (after 3 seconds), after another UFO disappearance in the clear sky. A total of 3-4 outbreaks were observed. I would like to add that on the evening of March 15, there was beautiful frosty weather with a completely clear sky. The wind, as could be judged by the smoke from the chimney of the CHP, was westerly.
In the following days, the weather turned bad, it snowed and visibility was no more than hundreds of meters. My eldest daughter observed this phenomenon with me. None of us have ever seen anything like this before.
The last UFO sighting was around 22-30 and was the shortest. At least until 0-30. On March 16, the UFO did not appear again.
