Initial data
Smirnov O.I. writes to a group of researchers studying anomalous atmospheric phenomena:
An article "Atmospheric anomalies" was published in the city newspaper, in which the author asks eyewitnesses of such phenomena to write to you.
I have long been interested in anomalies in the atmosphere, or as I used to call them - UFOs. Quite a few hypotheses have been published explaining the physics of these phenomena, among them chemiluminescence. There are optimists who tell the artificiality of UFOs. Personally, I don't think it's a chemiluminescence.
Now about the main thing. I had a chance to personally observe UFOs in the sky, north of the city of Kimry from a distance of about 15-20 km.
...
All this happened, as I have already indicated, on Saturday, and on Friday evening, around 17-00, many residents of our city, among them myself, observed several bright lilac flashes of light illuminating the sky to the north of the city.
It is possible, in my opinion, that the source of these flashes was the same object located on the surface of the Earth.
Similar objects, but of different shapes, were observed in mid-February and April 1981.
