UFO off the coast of Virginia Beach, September 14, 2021, 2:36 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
The following submission statement was provided by user u/eastern_Gate_9836 :
09/14/21 I was walking along the shoreline on the ocean in Virginia Beach from 34th Street south to 1st Street. It was a beautiful beach day with great weather and not crowded at all. As I was passing 6th Street at exactly 2:36 p.m., I heard an F-18 plane from a nearby naval air base The ocean is VERY close to the beach above the tourist hotels. I had my phone with me, so I took a short series of photos, but the plane was moving so fast that I didn't have time to take good pictures.
As soon as the F-18 flew over the Doubletree Hotel, I looked at my camera roll and saw that only two photos showed the plane, and the rest were misfires, random shots of the beach and some people enjoying their day.
The Oceana Naval Air Base is a stone's throw from my childhood home. I grew up among these planes, just 2 miles from where these photos were taken, but on that day in 2021, something was definitely "wrong." I took the photos because it seemed unusual to me that the F-18 would fly so low that in oceanfront hotels when there was no airshow scheduled this month.
I discovered the strangeness of these images only on 02/17.23, looking through the film on an old iPhone 8. In several photos, I noticed an anomaly in the sky, which simply does not make sense. As far as I can tell, it's not a kite, balloon, or drone, and I don't recall seeing this thing in the sky at the time the photos were taken.
Upon closer inspection, the object is a seven-sided geometric shape of a strange greenish hue, hovering at an altitude of about 200 feet above the Doubletree South Oceanfront Hotel. It's not a kite, because there's no one under it and you can't see the strings. There were almost no tourists on the beach, and only a small construction crew stood near the embankment, setting up a tent for sand castle competitions as part of the Neptune Festival.
The object has a matte-gray outer surface, but it seems that there is either a glimmer of light or a hole in it. It seems to change position slightly between frames. I'm guessing the Object is most likely the size of a minivan. There is another picture from the north that I took a few seconds earlier, and which from some angles may resemble a quadricopter drone. But as you can see in other enlarged photos, this Object does not look like any human-made drone that I have ever seen.
In the late 2010s, there was a surge in UFO activity in Virginia Beach, with almost daily sightings reported by pilots stationed in the Ocean, two miles to the west. Most of the observations occurred over the Atlantic Ocean.
so... What's going on here? Perhaps the F-18 in the photos was lifted into the air to intercept this Object, or perhaps the Object was hovering and watching the aircraft during a routine training mission. However, it was exciting to come across these photos 17 months later, especially since I remember the F-18 well. I would only like to see the Object that day, because I would have made a video and many more photos, I'm sure.

As I passed 6th St. at exactly 2:36 PM, I heard an F-18 jet from nearby Oceana Naval Air Station make a VERY close approach to the beach over the tourist hotels. I had my phone with me, so I snapped a short burst of photos, but the jet was moving so fast, I didn't have enough time to take any good ones.

Oceana Naval Air Station is a stone's throw from my childhood home. I grew up around these jets, only 2 miles from where these photos were taken, but something was definitely "off" that day in 2021. I took the photos because it struck me as unusual that an F-18 would be flying so low to the Oceanfront hotels when there was no airshow scheduled that month.
I did not discover the unusual nature of these images until 02/17/23, while scanning through my photo roll on my old iPhone 8. It's not a kite, nor a balloon, nor a drone, as far as I can tell, and I did not recall seeing this thing in the sky at the time the photos were taken.
Upon close inspection, the Object is a seven-sided, geometical shape with a strange, greenish hue, hovering approximately 200 feet in the air, above the Doubletree South Oceanfront hotel. It is not a kite, because there is nobody beneath it and no visible strings. The beach was mostly empty of tourists, and near the boardwalk there was only a small construction crew setting up a tent for the Neptune Festival sandcastle competition.
The Object has a matte gray exterior, but there appears to be either a glint of light or a hole in it. It appears to change position slightly between shots. I would guess that the Object is most likely the size of a minivan. There is another shot from further north which I took several seconds earlier, which could resemble a drone quadricopter from some angles. But, as it appears in the other photos zoomed in, this Object doesn't look like any human-designed drone that I've ever seen.

SO, ...what's going on here? Perhaps the F-18 in the photos had been scrambled to intercept this Object, or perhaps the Object was hovering and observing the jet on a normal training mission. It was thrilling, however, stumbling upon these pictures 17 months later, especially since I can clearly remember the F-18. I only wish I had perceived the Object that day, because I would have taken a video and many more photos, I'm sure.
Hypotheses
Balloons and balls
Balloon — aircraft (balloon), which is used for the flight gas, which is lighter than air.
Balloons - different sizes and shapes size toy, often made of latex. Is inflated with air or other gas. If the gas is lighter than air, the ball gains the ability to fly. The photo looks like a small dot. The colors and the opacity depends on the texture and color of the ball.
Kite
Tethered flying machine heavier than air. Supported in the air by wind pressure on a surface set at an angle to the direction of movement of the wind and held by the guard rails from the ground. The first mention of kites are found in the II century BC in China (the so-called snake-dragon). At the moment there are many shapes and designs of kites.
There are also kites, equipped with LEDs. The forms that emerge LEDs can be different: echoing the shape of the kite to Supplement his picture or absolutely independent. Color, frequency and sequence of blinking LEDs is varied.
Debris picked up by the wind
For UFOs often take empty plastic bags, bags from waste paper, Newspapers and other debris picked up by the wind. These objects can travel at different speeds, in different shades and shapes. Sometimes has a similarity with balloons and similar objects running man.

Investigation
A commentator with the nickname R2robot suggested that most likely this is one of the beach umbrellas that lifted a jet into the sky (example).
