EXPLANATION

In the autumn of 1979 (I do not remember the day), I performed the duties of an assistant to the military RP for civil military operations at the Knevichi airfield during joint flights with the military.

Weather: Neither cloudy, starry sky, cool (temperature +5 to +10°C). There was no moon.

The intensity of flights by 01-02 a.m. was below average, and there was a break in some civilian aircrafts.

Tu-16s flew mainly in the area above the point (above the airfield) and along route b (flight plan A.S. "Knevichi" this route is indicated as a so-called triangle)

Somewhere between 01 and 02 a.m. local time, a report was received from the crew walking along the triangle: "Knevichi", a pair is coming in your direction (meaning airplanes). They are coming brightly." The KDP took note of this, but did not attach importance to the message, as did I. After a while (I can't specify the exact time: it seemed to take a long and tedious time - but, apparently, after 5 minutes), the crew flying over the exact area at 4800 m delicately asked: "Knevichi, watch. Are they moving to your point?" There was a slight revival on the CDP: first they rushed to the radar, and then looked at the sky through the window.

The picture was as follows: two luminous bodies approached the traverse of our airfield with a course of 50-60 °. They walked in parallel, bearing formation (left or right - I do not remember). They passed the airfield C-c/ to the west, on the beam they wove an angle of about 45° with respect to the horizon. The speed was 4-3 times higher than that of the TU-16. The crew, who were at an altitude of 4,800 m, determined their height to be about 200 m higher, that is, about 5,000 m (pressure 760 im of mercury column). Crew

he did not change the altitude of his flight (as the military RP proposed to do), as he considered it unnecessary. The rear body had a front one 2-3 km in front, the side one was similar to 2-3 km, since the heading of the front one was about 45 °.

The dimensions of both bodies are approximately the same: the diameter of each of them was equal to 1-3/4 of the Moon's disk. The bodies glowed red, but not evenly, somehow scaly. Moreover, these scales flew back and melted at a distance of 1/2 the diameter of the body. There was no contrail of any kind. These two bodies passed from 1 airfield - 15 km and disappeared. Before they disappeared, there were no changes in the trajectory, speed, or glow. I did not see the moment when they disappeared: I just raised my head once again and did not find them. I don't know if they disappeared at the same time or at the same distance from the airfield.

The crews did not make any attempts to approach the bodies: the military RP forbade them to do so. The flights were carried out calmly, ignoring any unusual situation. The air defense was not interested in anything happening in the area of our airfield. The RP did not request anything from the air defense either. On our P-12, there were no marks from targets at short ranges (from the moment of detection of flying bodies on ]]KDA to the moment of their disappearance) and there could not be. Among other things, the P-12 is an old and unreliable thing, the operators also do not inspire much confidence. The locator was working in the SPC+active mode.
