Initial data
Elena Ivanovna Markova (born in 1949) tells the Commission about:
Returning from work on January 12, 1982, in the area of my house at about 20-00, I noticed a kind of light cross in the sky: curved arcs radiated from a vertical light column in 2 directions.
The height above the horizon of this picture was about 45 degrees - the essence is below and to the left of the new moon, which at that time was in an absolutely cloudless sky (the evening was frosty, clear. the air is clean). The angular size of the vertical column was comparable to the size of 3 lunar disks. All this was located in the southeastern part of the sky (sector: east-southeast).
The lateral rays were thinner than the central light column, curved as if in an ellipse and were lost at a distance greater than the length of the central column. The top and sides of the central pillar were also indistinct, unlike its lateral borders.
The central part of the painting had generally clearer borders and was brighter than the side rays. The light of the "cross" is comparable to the light of street lamps, but weaker than it. The color of the "cross" is white, milky.
I observed all the phenomena for about 2 minutes, during which the "cross" did not change or move in the sky, and then I entered my house, because it was cold (the air temperature was about 15-20 degrees below zero).
The sight of the painting surprised the witness, she tried to look at the ground for any searchlights, other light sources that could cause such an effect, but did not find it.
