Initial data
1960, August 16; 23 p.m. local time; approx. 15 sec.
USSR, Kazakh USSR, Panvilovsky district, 18 km north of the village of Koktal, Barakhudzir River valley, camp of the geophysical party of one of the Leningrad Research Institutes.
Voroshilov N., geochemist; Sizov E.A., geophysicist technician; Sochevanov N.N., geophysicist; Tulin V.N., geologist.
The luminous body moved over the mountains of the eastern slope of the valley from north to south. By the time we left the tent, approximately 90° azimuth above the horizon at an angle of 30-35°, we could see a luminous body 1.2-1.5 times the diameter of the moon at full moon. A few seconds after our exit... the body disappeared behind the top of the mountain on the left bank of the river. After a few more seconds, it came out from behind the peak, became visible again and continued to move away in a southeasterly direction, as if maintaining a constant height above the ground and speed...
They managed to see it for 10-15 seconds, after which it disappeared behind the mountains. During this time, it moved from its latitudinal position relative to us by 45-60°, i.e. the azimuth from observers to the body at the time of its disappearance was about 135-150 degrees. The body shone brightly, in the opinion of N.N. Sochevanov, with a yellowish color, in the opinion of E.A. Sizonov, who of the other observers remembers the phenomenon most clearly, with a white color. The shape of the luminous body is round, may be somewhat flattened vertically, approaching a lentil-shaped shape. The brightness of the glow of the central part and the edges of the body is either almost the same, or maybe the edges shone a little fainter. After passing through the body, there was no afterglow of gas outlets or tail of light. The sky was relatively clear, with only a few small clouds.
