In 1888, stonemason Alexander McDonald from Abriahan saw a "large animal with short legs" emerge from the lake and jump within 50 yards (46 m) of the shore where McDonald was standing.

MacDonald reported his sighting to Loch Ness Bailiff Alex Campbell and described the creature as looking like a salamander.
