"Ghosts" — the story of I. S. Turgenev, conceived by the writer in 1855, completed in 1863 and published in March 1864, issued to F. M. and M. M. Dostoevsky journal "Epoch".

Thanks to letters by Turgenev to Pauline Viardot believed that the basis for the story was a dream which came to Turgenev in 1849: in the dream, he saw a white figure that called itself his brother Anatoly (brother with the same name he was not); they both became birds and flew above the ocean. Assume that Turgenev has created three editions of the text, which subsequently resulted in three independent works: "Faust", "Ghosts" and "Pretty".

The story itself is written in the first person. The plot is fairly simple:

The main character had a woman who asked him to meet her near the oak. He immediately wakes up and goes to look for the lady. Finding the oak tree, he sees the Ghost of a woman who calls herself Alice. She asks him to go to her, and the hero obeyed, suddenly appears in the clouds. That night the woman's spirit carries him to the cliff to black gang, Isle of Wight. The next night they go to Italy. In Rome, obviously, flying and even through time, they are watching Julius Caesar. Then they get to the Volga and see Stenka Razin. After that, they visited France, Germany, Petersburg. One of the nightly raids, they meet Death itself, and then the character wakes up in the grass next to Alice, feeling in the body the pain from the injury. Ellis bids him farewell and disappears forever. The hero is lost in conjecture what it was: a Ghost, a wandering soul, an evil spirit, a Sylphide, a vampire. The hero realizes that he is sick, and suspects that his death is near.

In the original version of the novel Turgenev decided to make Ellis a vampire, however, in a letter dated December 23, 1863, Dostoevsky wrote to Turgenev that a mention of the "ghoul" makes the story less fantastic; Turgenev removes these details from the work.

This story is often included in anthologies and collections of fiction stories and novels in the horror genre.

Phenomena in artwork: Ghost

A Ghost in the novel stands a woman with the name Ellis. Not only is she able to be the main character, but also can make both of them could travel through space and time. To do this, the main character is necessary only to provide that.

-- I came! -- I cried at last with an effort.

Muffled and strangely heard my voice.

-- I love you-- I heard a whisper.

-- You love me! 'said I in amazement.

-- Give yourself to me-- again rustled to me.

- To give myself to you! But you're a Ghost -- you have no body.-- Strange animation captured me.-- What are you, smoke, air, steam? To give myself to you! Answer me first, who are you? If you lived on earth? Where do you come from?

-- Give yourself to me. I hurt you will not do. Just say two words: take me.

I looked at her. "What is she talking about? -- I thought.-- What does it mean? And how will she take me? Or try?"

- Well, well, ' said I aloud, and unexpectedly loudly, as if someone behind me pushed.-- Take me!

Before I could utter these words, as a mysterious figure with a kind of inner laughter, which for a moment shook her face, bent forward, her hands separated and stretched... I wanted to jump; but I was already in her power. She threw her arms around me, my body rose half yard from the ground -- and we both floated smoothly and not too swiftly over the wet grass motionless.

A female Ghost refuses to explain who she is. Indicated only that the life she was married (she had a ring on your finger) and that her name is Ellis. It is described as follows:

It was a woman with a small non-Russian face. Issara-whitish, translucent, with barely the aforesaid shadows, it was like the figures in alabaster, lit from within the vase, and again looked familiar.

She says, how does the main character that binds them, why she loves him and how she got these abilities.

Also to the ghosts probably can be attributed met their Death, because she clearly has a visual image. In the story she is described as follows:

I wrapped the head in the direction they pointed me trembling hand,-- and saw something... something really terrible.

That thing was the worse that had no definite image. Something heavy, dark, yellowish-black, spotted like the belly of a lizard-- not a cloud and not smoke, slowly, snake-like movement, moving above the ground. Dimensional, wide fluctuations in top-down and bottom-up, oscillation, reminiscent of sinister wingspan birds of prey when it seeks its prey; at times an inexplicable nasty primykanie to the ground-- so it nestles the spider to catch the fly... Who are you, what are you, menacing mass? Under her breath -- I saw it, I felt it -- everything was destroyed, everything was numb... Rotten, corrupting chill carried from it-this chill was sick at heart and in the eyes darkened and the hair stood on end. It has come; that power which there is no resistance, where everything is subject, which, without vision, without the image, without meaning -- sees everything, knows everything, and as a bird of prey chooses his victims, like a serpent crushes them and licks its frozen sting...

-- Ellis! Ellis! -- I cried as frenetic.-- It is death! death itself!

It is interesting that Ellis is afraid of Death and tries to quickly get away. It reveals in Ellis vampire traits:

"She saw! It's all over! I lost!..-- heard her gasp a whisper.-- Oh, I unfortunate! I could use to gain life... and now... Nothing, nothing!"

Though the author has removed an explicit reference to the vampire origin of Ellis, he left quite a strong hint of its purpose relative to the main character. It also specifies the description of the girls before the disappearance:

Two paces from me lay stretched out motionless a young woman in a white dress, with scattered hair, bare shoulder. One hand dropped behind his head, the other fell on his chest. Eyes were closed, and clenched his lips made a light red foam. Is it Ellis? But Ellis is a Ghost, and I saw before me a living woman. I crawled to her. bent...

-- Ellis? is that you? -- I cried. Suddenly, slowly quivering, the wide eyelids lifted; dark, piercing eyes stared at me -- and at the same moment I was bitten and lips, warm, wet, with blood smell... soft hands tightly wrapped around my neck, hot full Breasts heaved against mine.

This description clearly suggests that Ellis is a vampire. Completes the picture of what the author says about the disease of the main character in the final works:

The doctor says that I have a little blood, calls my illness by the Greek name "anemia".

Despite this explicit description of a vampire, the author describes the girl as a Ghost in the title and text of the story.

It is worth noting that ghosts, like vampires, is credited with the ability to feed on living energy. Such information is sometimes found in the true stories about Zaloznykh the dead that come to their living spouses. This representation was strengthened and gained popularity during the period of increased interest in spiritualism, as it was believed that the spirit take the energy to materialize in the medium.

Thus, in the novel there is a reference to the attitudes in people's beliefs that the dead can communicate with the living through dreams and to see them in other worlds.

The ending of the story sends the reader to the notion that people can communicate with representatives of the other world, when they themselves are close to death (or Vice versa – communication with souls of the dead can lead to a sad outcome).
