The mass death of seals in the Caspian Sea could have been triggered by the release of methane due to seismic activity.

According to the latest information, 2.5 thousand carcasses of the Caspian seal were found on the shore of the Caspian Sea in Dagestan. The Regional Ministry of Nature reported that the incident was caused by natural factors, and the number of nerves is stable and is in the range of 270-300 thousand. According to the head of Rosprirodnazdor S. Radionova, the seals died due to hypoxia, RIA Novosti reports.

Senior lecturer of the Department of Oceanology of the Geographical Faculty of Lomonosov Moscow State University S. Mukhametov stressed that the Middle Caspian is rich in hydrocarbons. As a result of various seismic shocks, microcracks, fractures occur, and natural gas comes out from the bottom. Natural gas is almost entirely methane. It does not dissolve well in water and rises to the surface. If at some point there was quite a lot of it in the air, then the seals could be poisoned by methane, a poisonous gas that destroys the nervous system.

He also noted that if chemicals or other toxic substances were spilled into the sea, not only seals, but also fish and other organisms would die. This indicates that the seals died after all due to natural causes.

In addition, the seals died significantly north of the place where they were found. The scientist came to this conclusion based on the analysis of the system of currents in the Caspian Sea.
