The solar-powered plane, which will travel around the world in 2015, has made its first flight. Solar Impulse 2 launched from the Payerne airfield in Switzerland, reports the BBC.
Solar Impulse 2 is an updated version of the famous plane that Swiss aeronauts Bertrand Picard and Andre Borschberg flew through the United States last year.
During the flight of Solar Impulse 2, test pilot Markus Scherdel was in the cockpit, who raised the aircraft to an altitude of about 1800 meters and performed several maneuvers to test the controllability of the device.
"This is a great day for the entire Solar Impulse team," said Bertrand Picard.
The carbon fiber plane has a huge wingspan of 72 meters, which is wider than the Boeing-747. And at the same time, it weighs only 2.3 tons.
The upper part of the wings is covered with about 17 thousand solar cells that power four electric motors. The aircraft can reach speeds of 140 km per hour. During the day, the solar panels charge the lithium batteries, which can then be used to fly at night.
