Viganello is the Italian village, on territory of which within a few months of no sunlight. The settlement is located in a valley surrounded by Alpine mountains, so from November 11 to February 2, this area is devoid of sunlight.
To solve this unpleasant situation in the village was built “artificial sun” – a huge mirror, located on the mountain that reflects sunlight. A giant reflector is a sheet of steel about four to eight meters.
The mirror is placed at an altitude of 870 meters above the village. Design controls the computer, which is tracking the position of the sun, turn the mirror so that the sunlight came into the village as much as possible.
For many centuries, the inhabitants of the village Viganello every year, February 2, celebrated “the return of the sun”. That all changed in 2006 when the architect Giacomo Bonzani created a gigantic construction project, which will irrigate the sunlight of the main square of the village all year round.
Reflective design was established in December 2006. Since then, Viganello every winter is bathed in warmth and light.
