Under one of the churches in the Mexican town of Mitla near Oaxaca, a labyrinth was discovered, which was probably considered by the Indians to be a passage to the world of the dead.

Mitla is a significant object for the indigenous Zapotecs, whose society and culture developed dynamically from the VI century BC until the arrival of the Spaniards in the 20s of the XVI century.

Using various methods of geophysical scanning, scientists have identified a network of tunnels, as well as large voids at depths of five to eight meters. Perhaps there is a separate hall there.

According to historical sources from the time of colonization, among the Zapotecs, Mitla was considered a portal to the afterlife. The monk Francisco de Burgova, who explored the area at the end of the XVII century, described an impressive underground temple with four rooms, where the tombs of rulers and priests stood. In the last room, there was also a passage deep into it, leading to a network of tunnels that resembled streets in scale.

Scientists plan to continue the study of the find in the fall of this year.
